What razor to try next?

I started DE shaving back in January this year, and have tried an EJ89, slim and an R41 2011.

I found the EJ89 and slim comfortable, but not especially close (even with the slim on 9). That prompted me to get the R41.

I've had the R41 for over 4 months and have shaved with it almost every morning. I'm as careful as I can be and have tried many different blades, but can't get a comfortable shave from it, especially on the neck and upper lip. Howeverf, I love the closeness of the shave, so I keep shaving with it.

So, as Christmas is on the horizon, it may be a good time to ask SWMBO for a new razor, but which one(s!) to ask for? I still want the close shave, but without the nicks and general soreness. Would a fatip or a slant be a way to go?

I have heard the Fatip recomended alot here as a smoother shaver than the R41 but I have no experience with either.

I would recommend that you try a slant though. For me I have a 39c and it is very smooth and efficient, I have tried over twenty different types of razors and so far the slant is my favorite.

I got an EJ DE86 for my first razor then went and got an R41 - so a similar journey to yourself.

I went to get a slant but the model I wanted seems a little too hard to get hold off at the moment so I thought about it and bit the bullet and got a Fatip.

It's relagted the R41 to the subs bench. I find I can get a very close shave and it's more comfortable than the R41 with a wider range of blades. I've had the FaTip a couple of weeks now and I really enjoy using it. I'm quite glad the Slants were not so easily available now.

Have you considered a Vintage Gillette and a re-plate for it?

Try a Slant they are the best DE razors.

Thanks for the thoughts. It seems the decision is split so far between a fatip and a slant. What about getting a better handle, and where to get one in the UK?

ArNav - you asked about the blades I'd tried. They are: Gillette 7oc yellow, 7oc black, astra SP, wilkinsons, feathers, med preps, shark SC, permasharp super stainless, supermax platinum, bolzano superinox & red IPs. I've still got some labs, gillette 7oc blues, 7oc greens, gillette silver blues, crystals, lord SC, lord platinum, and treet durasharp. (I made my own blade sampler from Connaught shaving)

If you already have the R41...I would forego the Fatip and get the Slant. They are extremely good and I'm quite certain that you won't regret the purchase. I used mine again this morning and it made me wonder why I don't use it more often.

A slant should be next. A more proximate need can be filled by a long-handled Progress.
