What's new

What did barbers use back in the 50s?

Was it boar or badger? Something in between? Also, I'm thinking about getting boar but how do I know if I get one that wasn't cut? I want it to be soft and cheap...under $30 at the moment. If there is such a thing. Basically, I'm looking for somewhat stiff but get's soft later. IF the cheapest badger does that...I'm interested...What's popular for barbers now? Practical choices, not..."we use only the highest grade silver tip badger because we like to use the best period." Yeah, if MOST barbers could afford that and a frog had wings...and there were more peanuts in my Mr. Goodbar...etc etc...

I don't know about barbers, but my dad told me that he saw his first can of shaving cream at the Pearl Harbor PX around 1951.

because of health laws brushes probably stopped being used very early in the 20th century and they have never returned. In many cases the regular customers left their shaving mugs and brushes in the shop so when they came in they could use their own stuff.

The perfect brush line for you is the Omega Boar line of Professional Brushes made for Barbers. A big'un is sold by Appleton's Barber supply for 10.50 , its a Marvy brush thats a rebranded Omega Barber Brush. Shoebox Shave Shop has a full line of Omegas and West Coast Shaving has a nice Omega for a steal.

I have 3 Omega Pro boars and they are tough and well made but very very soft especially as you use and break them in. Personally I prefer them to fight soaps than deal with creams .

It's actually quite good. I have that brush. I still have dreams of maybe one day finally finding a place that will make a silvertip badger/boar bristle mix brush for me.

I'm using the pro #49 and honestly I don't see any reason to spend any more money on brushes other than to have something expensive and pretty on my counter....

You really can't go wrong with an Omega, mine digs loads of soap up and works well on hard to soft soaps, however the initial smell is horrible
