What's new

What are you reading these days?

I got two books on the go. Besides my school books

Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders: The True Story of Newfoundland's Confederation with Canada by Greg Malone

Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education by Nurit Peled-Elhana

So lets hear what everyone is reading

I love books. And I love hearing what other people are reading.

Well I have Liberating Atlantis by Harry Turtledove and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare in my work bag right now. I have World War Z by Max Brooks half finished on my kobo, and Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein half finished on the head of my bed with the rest of my short list. As soon as I finish one of them I will move onto Why I hate Canadians by Will Ferguson, after reading How to be a Canadian I am sure I will love it!

I'm going through four books at the same time right now

Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell
The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith
The Onion's Encyclopedia
and Fresh Off The Boat by Eddie Huang (the chef at Baohuas NYC)

I just got a few books from a friend who is moving back to the US in a few months, and is paring down his stuff. I got the complete Batman: Knightfall series, as well as Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I just started Mam'zelle Guillotine, a story of the Scarlet Pimpernel, on my Kindle. I don't even know what I have left on there to read, but it's a lot. I've tried Alice's Adventures in Wonderland I don't even know how many times, but the writing is so screwballish it's impossible to read. I think Einstein's Theory of Relativity is on there still, as well as Origins of Species. Man, it's crazy. And I still need to finish Tesla: Man out of Time!

Undaunted Courage - It's about the Lewis and Clark expedition. It was sort of a Christmas gift. Pretty good.

The Golden Bough - A fairly old book about magic, myth and religion in antiquity and how it shaped culture, or culture shaped it. It was, supposedly, very influential to T.S. Eliot and others. I've had the book for years and just started it a month ago.

Haha. I'm going to check those last two out. Btw, I'm Canadian

Currently reading:

Captured by the Engines- Joe R. Lansdale (limited edition with slip case)

Conagher- Louis L'Amour

Riders of the Purple Sage- Zane Grey (on my Kindle)

Currently reading: The Count of Monte Cristo, Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Dracula. Yup I like the older stuff including Shakespeare

Peter the Great, Robert K. Massie. It is around 1,000 pages and very well researched. Life was a challenge in the 1690's Russia even if you we're Tsar. He transformed Russia from medieval to modern Western in less than 20 years including creation of a world class Naval fleet with seaports where there were none. Doug

there is a thread in the speakeasy forum, but currently reading:

shades of grey - jasper fforde
the fault in our stars - john greene

I'm reading "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the "Night Angel" trilogy. But I'm a little disappointed in both of them. They are both well written but I like a lot of fantasy. So far not a lot fantasy. Hard to find a good fantasy.
