What's new

What are my options for mild razors?

I got a DE89BA11 which I've been using but it still gives me some irritation (less than a cartridge though) so I'm wondering what's considered milder. I hear a lot about Techs and Superspeeds but I'd also like to look at some more modern razors and possibly some stainless steel razors. Shame I can't get the original bulldog anymore, I heard that was super mild.

For stainless steel razors the Feathers are accepted as some of the mildest with the older AS-D1 being somewhat milder than the newer AS-D2. I believe the Weber is also considered less aggressive than offerings from Ikon for example.

Before you chase another razor... have you tried different blades, like the Astra SP? Also, have you tried different shaving cremes and/or soaps? Perhaps something with a bit more "slippiness" or a bit more water may help? And, without sounding critical, how's your technique? Are you pushing down on the razor at all?

Not trying to deter you from getting a different razor but you may be able to love the EJ razor still...

the Merkur slants look "mean" but are actually very mild. The Merkur Futur is very aggressive even on the lowest setting.

I would say the blade is a good place to check first and if you can try different ones. Lather is important too. You could look at the Feather Popular razor which is partly made of plastic but not expensive and is TTO. The Weber is more aggressive than the DE89 though.

I would like to suggest the Astra SP, too. And taking more time to develop your technique. I had inconsistent shaves with the EJ89 until my technique improved. I have just switched over to a Weber. It is mild, maybe not as mild as a an EJ89, but I am having to adjust to this, too.

Feather AS-D1. But it's expensive.

You can get a post-war Tech for about ten bucks. One of the best mild razors ever made, period.

The Astra SP is my current favorite blade (Derby's were alright but I wasn't interested in changing blades ever shave and Personna Reds were too sharp) and I've been using Mama Bear's shaving soap, which from what I understand is a great soap. My technique isn't amazing yet but I don't push down and I'm good enough to only get the occasional nick.

Merkur 25C. Open comb but very mild due to very little blade exposure. Works with any blade you care to imagine from Feather to Derby. I don't undrstand why this razor gets so little airtime here - possibly not aggressive enough?

+1. Despite the open comb construction, it is one mild razor.

Mild razors that you can buy new would be

Feather AS-D2 (stainless Japan)
Merekur Progress (adjustable but very mild at the lowest setting)
Weishi (new Chinese razor)
PILS 101NE (stainless Germany)

Merkur 1904 OC has a rep for being mild and I just picked up a Schick Krona. From what I read the Gillette SS Blue Tips are considered mild although like most things in wet shaving YMMV.

Others have said it, but I'll pile on: try a different blade. Better yet, try several. Get a sample pack and work your way through it until you find the blade that gives you the smoothest, most irritation-free shave.

If you really want to try a mild shaver, the Feather stainless is certainly an option. On the other end of the price scale, a Lord L6 is extremely mild.
