Weishi 2003m vs. 9306?

Hey BandB!

So I'm just about fed up with DE shaving but with the amount of money I've invested in it (my own mistake) I really want to keep trying and make it work. I've currently been using a Merkur 33c (Classic) for my shaves but due to my almost certain imperfect technique I can't get a nice shave - it's been near two months since I've had a comfortable shave! I won't lie, using my gillette fusion worked great, the only reason I wanted to switch to De was because the cost of the cartridges is past my budget.

With that being said, I've been reading that the Weishi is one of the mildest razors around. But after reading this post (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-291084.html), where the guy states: "Weishi 2003-M - The blade was sitting out a lot higher than that in my Gillette razor, probably at its setting 5 or 6. I gulped and went ahead. Result was 6 nicks around throat area but, surprisingly, no razor burn." I'm not so sure.

I'm thinking.. 6 cuts...a blade sitting higher in his gillette? How mild can this razor be? I noticed that this is the 2003m Weishi, but after looking at some pictures, it looks the exact same as the 9306 (and read in a post that its simply different materials). Does anyone know if the 2003m is more aggressive than the 9306? Or the same? It must be as I've heard that the "Weishi" is near impossible to cut yourself with.

Also, I nick myself quite often with my 33c, but I noticed on the blade gap chart that the Weishi and the 33c have the same blade gap (.56mm) - but would it still be less aggressive than the 33c considering that aggressiveness is not only determined by blade gap?

Sorry for so many questions - I just don't want to spend more money on something that may not be any better than my current razor.

Thanks in advance!

PUT 2 BLADES IN A MERKUR
ONE WITHOUT 1mm FILE SIDES AND ONE NEW
NEW ON TOP MORE AGRESSIVE
NEW ON BOTTOM MILD SHAVE
AND ALWAYS USE NOT FAKE BLADES

I have a Weishi 9306 and it was the first DE razor I started with and I shaved daily with it for the first 10 days before I discovered the world of Vintage. It is a decent starter razor for the money but I doubt it would ever outlast any EJ, Merkur or vintage Gillette. It is definitely a mild razor and I would guess its equivalent to a 3 setting on a Gillette Slim or Fatboy and shaves very similar to a regular Gillette superspeed.

I would recommend a Weishi 9306 for anyone who wants to try DE shaving without the large upfront financial commitment but doubt it will beat out better razors in longevity.

Hi,
Both Weishi razors and the Merkur 33c are pretty mild and not particularly heavy and cuts and nicks with these razors are usually down to people applying too much pressure to compensate. Although they are both mild you will still cut yourself if you apply too much pressure, my advice would be to slow your shaves right down, take your time and use no pressure

I have the 2003M. Purchased after reading about it on one of the shaving blogs as being a good starter, especially for the money. Eh... I'd recommend getting a used SuperSpeed even if it costs a few dollars more.

In fact, anyone that wants my 2003M for free just PM me with an address and I will send it out (may take me a week... I will be traveling until next Sunday).

Hrm... no one has ever mentioned this to me before but it sounds interesting and worth a try. Considering the several blades I have all have 1mm file sides, would I have to cut/file these down?

And I PM'd you Nomad, hopefully your offer is still available!

yes one blade cut down with a file the edges
work with 3 parts razors ok

What is the problem with your shaves, are they too rough on your face, or are they not close enough? If they are not close enough, try a different razor and/or blade. If it is beating your face up, try slowing down, pressing less, being meticulous about keeping the blade at the same angle to your face, and shave in the shower.

Wash your beard vigorously with regular soap and your hands. Don't go using any stiff brush etc. The soap will remove the natural oil from your beard which will allow the water to penetrate it as you shower. Do this first thing as you get in the shower. After the 5 minutes or so of the rest of your shower, with running water over your face here and there, your beard will be soft and easy to cut. then you won't need to do a lot of extra touching up etc to get a decent shave. This will result in less wear and tear on your face.

Take a day or two off from shaving. Your next shave will likely be better. Why, did you become more skilled on your days off? Of course not. Your skin healed up.

If you want a razor that is idiot proof, ask the idiot that owns one. I love the Ri,Mei. It's on amazon from several vendors for $2.00 or so. If you tear your face up with this thing, you might just be better off with a cartridge. I don't think you will. You will get a decent shave and get some confidence in the system.

If all of this has lost it's appeal and you just want a cheap, decent, easy shave, get the Dorco twin blade Trac II/Atra replacements cartridges at Family Dollar. You can get a week out of them and they are about $0.25 each. You'll need a compatible handle. The Bump Fighter handle doesn't pivot and is basically a Trac II handle. There are Asian market versions of the Atra on Amazon for about $5.00 or so but I have no experience with them. The Atra and it's clones pivot. I always keep my old Atra handle loaded with one of the Dorco cart and in the shower for when I'm in a hurry or if I just feel like using it. It's about as cheap as using DE, I get shaves that are just as good, but it lacks any "coolness". While I shouldn't care about how cool my shaving gear is, and I don't get carried away with that aspect of, there is a certain appeal to using a DE for me that isn't there with the Atra.

Give some specifics about what is not good about your shaves. While it can be difficult to help someone get close, it is pretty simple to help someone not tear their face up.

I guess the specific issue I'm having is that I can't get a close shave without tearing up my face. And there are certain spots on my beard where it seems near impossible to get rather long hairs cut at all because they almost stick to my face and the blade can't get under it. I'm also having a hard time going atg without any irritation - something which I was always able to do without irritation with my fusion. I'm fairly certain the it is because my angle is off, but I find the head of the merkur 33c so bulky that I can't get a great angle in certain spots.

I'm looking forward to receiving Nomad's weishi because I've heard from others that a milder shaver with a sharper blade (i.e., feather) solved all their irritation problems. I hope this is the case for me.

I'm also going to try out platon's suggestion of putting another razor on top of my new blade to see if it gives a milder shave. Wish me luck!

Good luck!

I think you are on the right track, trying different razors. I've neevr even seen a Merkur much less used one, so I don't know how user-friendly they are. Same for the Weishi, but the Weishi seems to be pretty universally regarded as easy to use in terms of avoiding irritation. This is why I started with cheap razors. I spent $10.00 on a Shaving Factory and had bad luck. I hate that thing and won't shave with it again. But, at only $10.00, I didn't mind giving it my 6yo son who gets BBS with it every day with zero irritation. In about 8 years or so he's going to need a blade in there to get a good shave. I bought a $3.00 Click razor and while it doesn't get as close as I like, it does leave me comfortable. Next up was the $2.00 Ri,Mei and I find it perfect.

So, it took three razors to find one I like, one I could live with, and one that should be on display in a museum as a torture instrument.

Interesting... I looked into the Ri Mei and for the price I've read it does seem to be a decent razor. But I gotta ask... you gave a razor to your 6 year old son? I don't know if it was a funny joke or I'm missing something, but I'm assuming he "shaves" without a blade... and gets a bbs shave, right? Or have I just had a really long day at work? HAHAHA
