Wavy/Curly Hair Cuts and Styling?

Anyone else have wavy hair here? Did a search and not much turned up.

Last year when I started wet shaving, I switched to an old school barber and tried to get a classic hair style. But I've got this thick hair that starts out with cowlicks and goes in every direction and then gets progressively curlier as it grows out.

I've tried tons of gels, pomades, creams, fibers, sprays, etc. Most of them seem to either dry out the hair and let it poof out or weigh the hair down and it gets stuck to the head. Best I've found so far is Axe pomade, which seems to help define and hold the hair.

What kind of cuts are you guys getting and how do you style it?

I've started to grow my hair out a bit and have begun using American Crew Fiber. Not sure if you've tried their line yet, but I'm really happy with it. It's a little thick at first, but rubbing in a couple drops of water on your hand to cream it up a bit helps a ton. It gives it a good hold yet not matted down, assuming you don't use too much of it.

I've tried two of them so far:

AC Grooming Cream is a thick, almost gummy cream. For me, it ends up clumping my hair and weighs it down. Looks terrible. For straight hair, I think it would work much better, adding texture to flat hair and giving some control and hold.

AC Pomade I just picked up this week, it's oilier than Axe (and obviously pretty much any non-water based pomade) and seems to have less hold but gives a bit of sheen to the hair. It's more forgiving than the Axe stuff. I haven't yet tried using a ton of it yet but I might have to.

Haven't used anything else. The Fiber I think will be too waxy. My hair is fairly light and gets weighed down easily while also being really dry so I look for something that adds shine or moisture to the hair.

Groom and Clean is something that will sometimes work, it doesn't weigh the hair down much and adds some shine to it but smells terrible and the hold isn't great.

Brylcreem is terrible. Makes the hair just lifeless and dry looking.

One random product that worked surprisingly well is the now discontinued Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Styling Cream. When my hair is a bit longer, it defines the curls/waves and adds a very healthy looking (not wet or greasy) shine while providing good hold, not flaking at all, and able to be reworked or reset throughout the day. I'd like to explore more creams and really should load up on this stuff, but when my hair is shorter it doesn't work as well.

I think my hair would be less fussy if I grew it out and allowed it to wave/curl some (think James Franco) but I'm pretty short and stocky and work in a corporate setting, so I try and stick with a more classic look.

Used more AC Pomade today and not a fan. Not enough hold, so you have to use more product, that weighs the hair down, everything fell over. Nice shine, that's about it. It is easy to wash out though.

Tried three different gels this week, at best they provided a little hold, at worst just dried the hair out.

Went back to the Garnier Fructis cream, this is good stuff. If you like Brylcreem but want something a little less greasy that smoothes your natural waves and thickens the hair, give it a shot. Just a warning, it's discontinued...

I do mean to try the TowelHead cream, sounds pretty similar. Maybe I'll visit a fancy hair product place and ask for their feedback.
