Want to Upgrade from Personna Reds

I'm currently doing very well using Personna Reds and my EJ DE-87. They are very comfortable and forgiving and provide a good shave, but my beard is coarse in certain areas and I usually have to do several passes to cut through those areas. I'm looking for a blade that is a little sharper than the Reds that will cut through the coarse whiskers with less effort. I've tried Derbys and don't particularly like them, and my face is easily irritated so I don't think I want to try Feathers. What would be a good blade to move on to?

Iridium!!!!!. Used shark for 1st time today and not overly impressed. But then I didn't think that much of 7 O'clock either. I really like Iridium, best blade for me so far in all my razors.

I'm currently auditioning a few blades as go tos for my slant. I like Feather's but they're too unforgiving at times. The ones that are trying out are Astras, Yellow Gillette's and Iridium. So far, I'm on my first Iridium blade and I must say that it's sharper than the red personna but equally smooth. I'm 5 shaves into my first blade and it's still pretty sharp. My plan is to go with another before moving on to the Gillette Yellow. Astra is last only because I've bought a 5 pack when I was in Singapore last October and felt that they were excellent blades. Still, I'll need to compre them to the other two. Anyway, you have my suggestions - Astra, Gillette Yellows and Iridiums.

I have a DE887 also and am having marvelous shaves using Shark SuperChrome blades. 2 pass DFS with no irritation. Just my .02 worth

I have been using the personna reds for a few months and am looking to upgrade to something a little sharper too.

It seems like a lot of people like the shark blades. They are pretty easy to get so I think I am going to try them.

I had a pack of feathers a while back. I could get a great shave or two out of each blade but after that they weren't sharp enough.

Try Crystals, they work very well in my Krona. Got a better shave with them in the same razor than the Reds althogh the Reds are very smooth they didn't cut as well as the Crystals. Reds required more passes.

Sharks are one of my top blades. However I just tried some Astras and they are even better. I am going to have to revisit feathers again soon too - I did like them the first time around. All these (+Gillettes) would be good choices to try.

+1
I love the Iridiums. Super sharp but you want loose any blood. Great for the person with a strond beard and sensitive face like myself

As already mentioned, give Astras, Iridiums, or Gillette 7 O'Clock Yellows a try. All 3 were similar for me. Sharper than the RPIPs, but still have the smoothness that I like in the Red Packs. I hate the glue dots though.

Since he gives top score to Feather, it's safe to say that the rating system also more or less corresponds to sharpness. Then you can read the description for his take on the smoothness. Just according to Squire's results, in addition to the blades mentioned, it might be worth trying Indian Wilks. And of course should you happen into a stash of vtg UK Wilks, well, you'd be set.

This discussion is interesting to me because I have the characteristics described, namely, coarse beard (though not obscenely thick) and somewhat sensitive face. Derbys give me a good shave but nothing to write home about. Good to be confirmed in my instincts as I have ordered Iridiums (Iridia?) and yellow Gillettes.

Good luck!

Blades, like much of this hobby are subject to IMHO.......I suggest you purchase a few different types and give then a go for yourself.

As always, what works wonders for one my be the worst thing on the face of the earth to another.

Thanks very much for all of your suggestions!! Based on all of your input Astras and Iridiums seem to be a popular choice. Sharks were too, but for some reason they nick me. I ordered some Astra Superior Platinums but it looks like Iridiums aren't available in the U.S.?

West Coast Shaving had them, I thought.

Bluebirds might also work. I find them a bit sharper and at least as smooth as the Red Pack Personnas. Ditto for Astra Superior Platinums.

I recently tried some Perma-Sharp blades and was thoroughly impressed.
:thumbup1: Great blades at a great price. Search Ebay, a couple of Turkish sellers offering them at great prices. While your at it, pick up a ARKO stick from them for next to nothing.
