Want Opinions on the Midori Traveler's Notebook

I have a bad cold, so I think it might be the Nyquil talking, but I'm starting to really consider a passport sized Midori Traveler's Notebook. At first, I thought they were FAR too expensive, then I realized that, well...it can basically become a wallet with a notebook in it. Two or three notebooks in it, actually; the more notebooks it holds, the more awesome looking it becomes.

My question to you guys is how well does it actually function as a system? I'm talking with the different inserts, a couple notebooks, all the bells and whistles and little modifications. As I said, I plan on making this more of a wallet/planner than just a pocket notebook. Oh, and how well does that little pen clip work?

Any input is appreciated, guys, unless you're complaining about the price

Looks like you're on point here, unless you follow this advice: I think it's too expensive. It's not worth it. Don't get it. There are better options available.

Andy, I always value your opinion.

What else out there: Has the same rustic look and just that plain cool factor? Offers the same versatility and mod options at the same size? This needs to fit in my backpocket. Is less expensive? Has great, off-white, fountain pen friendly paper, even for wet nibs?

And please don't recommend making my own because I'm far too worthless for such a thing

How big is your back pocket? If you want all the bells and whistles, you might as well go for larger, right? Personally, my wallet feels too big whenever I have cash in it, besides the 3-4 cards I do carry. Carrying several pads of paper, plus all my wallet stuff, and having it still fit in my back pocket? No no, might as well carry a full sized pad and keep it in my bag. Granted I might be misunderstanding what you wrote.

That being said, I absolutely love the design of it of those Midoris. I imagine I could, however, do basically the same thing with a small bit of leather folded over. Maybe spend the money instead on a leather cell-phone case that has the card slots, and go with putting a small pad of paper in there instead of the cell phone? This of course means you need to find your own paper separately, but this at least frees you up to many different instead of the one brand.

If you want to go bigger, get one of the nice leatherbound e-reader covers and go the midsize route?

I got one from Goulet when they first got them. I really like it. I have several of the refills and I keep 3 in it at a time. I like all the paper types a lot, but Rhodia premium is still my favorite.

All that being said... it is too expensive. Don't buy it if you want the best value notebook. Do buy it if you want to get something really nice for yourself that is unique and you will probably like.

Its not expensive for what it is, the refills are fairly cheap, and as long as that hunk of leather is of a great quality and well put together then it will last you a lifetime, 50 bucks for a product that can do that is cheap.

Other cheaper options are dispoable, sound familiar ?, lol the other notebooks will work but this one can keep going with a new insert, kind of like our razors, or our FPs

If you use a notebook all the time, and want something to carry around, this one will outlast a regular cheap notebook and hold up to more abuse.

and if you didnt buy any of that, then you weren't really going to buy the book anyway

I still am

I haven't checked out the measurements, but you could probably put other "pocket" sized notebooks in it too. I'm with James, this thing will last a lifetime and is unique.

I have a bad cold, so I think it might be the Nyquil talking...

My last case of instant buyer's remorse was fueled more by sleep deprivation than medicine, but it's definitely worth waiting until you feel 100%.:001_rolle

That said, although this product doesn't appeal to me, I can see that it might be just what the doctor ordered for somebody else. One of those things where you start by wanting it, and then create a justification for buying it after the fact. We've probably all done it with something.

I bought the Passport size when the Goulet's started carrying it. I have 3 notebooks in it right now one of which is the monthly calendar. The calendar they carry is one that you have to fill in the months and days of the week. Since then, I found an actual 2013 calendar, but the company that had it was out of stock.I liked the passport size very much, it is easy to keep on you and take out for jotting a quick note. The paper is ok, no bleed through yet, but there is a fair amount of ghosting. One big thing, you need blotting paper for it, if you write a quick note, close it and put it in your pocket or bag, it will smear.

In my Goulet order that came yesterday, I bought the larger size. With the larger size, I heard that the Banditapple Carnet notebooks fit in, and are better paper. The 4.33 X 8.25 in size. I bought a few, but did not try them yet.

I agree that the piece of leather is expensive, but once I got my passport size book set up, I was as happy as can be with it. I am sure I will like the larger one even more!

Dave, are you using the books with the colored covers in your passport? If so, I think you may like the Midori refills for the large size traveler's a little better... it is pretty decent. I'm not sure why Midori didn't make their own paper for the passport refills.

Yes, one is blue and one is maroon.

I need to set up the larger one. The Goulets were out of the rubber band for holding more notebooks. I have to see what I have here to make do with until they get them in.

I have one, I still prefer the Field Notes Notebooks I think. They're more portable for me since I rarely carry a bag.

It's very appealing in theory but it lost a bit in reality.
