W&B question. need help

I have a problem. today while shaving with W&B I hit the sink by mistake. a part of the blade edge seemed to be damaged. it is so small that nobody can tell . unless with a magnifier or you really focus hard. I believe honing can solve it but I don't know how to hone a smiley. it is a 7/8 wedge razor with a very faint smile. so please any advice how to solve this?. and is it ok to shave with it?. what should I do?

PS. I got a 1-5-8-12k naniwa superstone. and a 220 DMT plate

You need to hone it out. Were it me, I'd dull the entire edge on glass and go down to my 1k bevel setter and start all over again. The damage is really minor so I don't think it'll take too long or be too difficult.

edit: nice razor, btw. I love those old blond horn scales. Wouldn't trade out the bug bites in them for anything either.

Like Mark said, that should hone out just fine. I had a similar nick in a blade and was able to hone it out on a fast coticule. A 1k bevel setter would work well too though...

thanks. the problem is I am a beginner. however I did hone a razor before until it became shave ready. well it wasn't perfect but it does shave very well. and the bevel was set so it was easy. also it was a straight edge. this one has a faint smile. do you recommend using the DMT 220? and how do you hone it? 45 degree strokes with the heels leading?. I just don't want to mess this razor. since I love it so much. it cuts down everything in its way. the only problem it has that it has no feedback while shaving. but gives me a very smooth clean shave.

thanks for the advice. now do you recommend using the 45 degree stroke or something else? should I use the dmt plate?.

you think my razor is nice? thanks a lot. the seller wanted to change the original scales but I told him not to :)

Looks like your razor was honed with tape on the spine, maybe more than one. I would start with a DMT 1200 and it should hone out just fine. I am not sure what you mean by 45 degree. You will wand to lay the blade flat on the stone and use a slight rolling x stroke to cover the smile.

If by 45 degrees do you mean have the heel out in front at a 45 degree angle? That is what I usually do followed by a rolling x stroke.

I'd go to 220 dmt, cause Im lazy. But that's small enough the 1k Nani should handle it just fine with a little work. And the feel of a 220 dmt on razors isn't very good, so you'd probably find it easier working with the nani.

Yeah I'd start with the Nani 1k due to what Ian said above. It'll take a little bit longer to get rid of the chip, but I hate dragging razors around on the dmt if I don't have to.

I've shared this video about a million times in threads just like this. Mr. Lewis did a great job with it so watch and learn :)

ok I will try this out. if the blade stands 90% flat on the stone I might skip it.

btw thanks guys for sharing. any new suggestions will work

Should hone out fine but will take a while at the razor is beefy.

Definitely honed with tape, I would go with one layer of super 88, it is the thickest tape at 8 mil. I would work the 1K stone stone your new bevel corresponds to the one layer of tape (dont forget to change the tape often)

I most often hone wedges with tape but only one layer, using more than one layer makes the tape more compressible and it is harder to get the nice edge

are your naniwas on a base? if not, flip them on the side and lap the side and hone on that. Because it's so narrow it makes it very very easy to hone a smiling blade rather than doing a rolling stroke. I did this on my 1k Chosera for a similar W&B I have and it worked out very well. If your stones aren't glued to something you could do this all the way up to the finisher
