Visiting Rome

I'm going to visit soon Rome for a few days. I'm planning just to have a straight shave in the barber shop and buying 100 ml jar of Proraso shving cream and maybe even a cheap Omega brush. Would any kind soul gently suggest me some bit more sophisticated shaving items, above a mere supermarket level?

If you're going to Italy, ask the locals where you can find antique shops. Maybe you'll find treasure..

Depending on where you are and how long you have you should be able to find plenty of Proraso products. As for other items you may have to scrounge around a bit, I found one store at the Plaza Republica that had a fairly good Omega brush selection. I think Marco may be able to help direct you a little better. Rome is a great city to visit.

You might like to search for retailers of Santa Maria Novella products and as others have mentioned..... perhaps PM Marco and ask him for a few tips.

$IMG_0339[1].jpgI can give some tips about my experiences in the north by Bologna but I would guess it should be the same in Rome(when I was in Rome I wasn't wetshaing yet but I do remember seeing the same type of stores). So I hope it still helps. In almost all the supermarkets you should be able to find Proraso and Palmolive. In some I've seen Figaro and Prep. All for cheap so stock up. You will see Sally beauty supply type stores also. They are worth a quick peek inside, that's where I found Gillette and Nivea shave cream, Omega brushes among other stuff. I remember they had Floid aftershave which I regret not getting. Every time I go I also get a shave, always come out feeling refreshed. . The pic is everything I bought. It all came out to around $52US so I was stoked. Have fun Rome it's a beautiful city.

The only place I've seen what are probably my all time favorite DE blades in in Italy. Look for the Gillette Platinums in the all white box with blue lettering. They're expensive; but a treat well worth buying. Pick up a few packs. You won't regret it.

The Santa Maria Novella store is located at Corso Rinascimento, 47.

It's between the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, on the main N/S street (Corso Rinascimento).

I had kind of a hard time finding anything besides Proraso stuff or really cheap gels/foams, actually. I must have checked every drugstore we walked past in Rome, Florence and Milan. I did hit the main Santa Maria Novella store next to the Santa Maria Novella church when in Florence though.

I brought home a plethora of goodies when I went about a year or so ago. Every pharmacy will carry just about the entire Proraso line. Outside of that, there are several shops that carry tons of other goodies to include brushes, soaps, creams, aftershaves, you name it.

I hit two shops while I was there that had a really nice selection, although their names escape me at the moment. Let me do some digging and see if I can find them because I know their general location.

Okay, one was Bertozzini dal 1913 and the other one I can't remember but it was near the Via del Corso somewhere close to the Trevi fountain. I'll do some more digging and see what I can come up with.

EDIT: I think this is the one. Mr. Muzio (Perfumery Muzio Muzio Di Mario C)

Here are some terrible pictures from this place. Forgive the quality, they were shot with an old iPhone 3G and it looks like I was shaking with excitement.

OMG! I guess here is another must stop for me on our trip to Italy this fall. So much to see and only a couple weeks to spend :o10:

If you are on that path the Pizza at Pizza Novona is worth the trouble....the Piazza Navona was originally build as a chariot track (long straights and tight returns) the recently restored fountain is a Bernini - the guy who did the canopy at St. Peter's.
You might want to bring a backpack....
We are with you in spirit...
And bring 1/2 the clothes and 2x the money you were thinking of....

I was just in Rome this summer, I didn't realize how many different products there were (hadn't found this board yet) so I didn't stock up... but in the 3 days I walked the streets, I found a couple of dedicated shave shops so worth dropping in.

On a completely different note, I highly recommend trying one of the food tours. The wife and I signed up for one and it was one of our favourites!

Look at the size of that Omega brush in the top left of the top picture. It looks massive!!

Can anyone name the brushes from left to right in the bottom pic. I bet there are some talented individuals on here that could
