Vision 2000

I had an older Merkur Vision a while back. While I loved the shave I got from it I found it to be unreliable in operation. The adjustment mechanism would slip and just spin loose. I would have to take it apart to clean it thoroughly to get it working again and getting it back together and working right again was a real chore.

I miss it and have been thinking about the newer Vision 2000. Is it any more reliable? Or at least easier to get apart to clean?

:thumbup:Yes, the Vision that I have has some resistence when opening with the nylon bushing inside the handle. It works like a locking nut on heavy equipment that keeps it from working loose with the vibration and torque. Also, it is an absolute dream to dis-assemble and assemble when cleaning or lubricating. Ten seconds or less to push the top bar down, tap the end piece to the wide slot, and twist the base loose.

Just as easy to re-assemble; in fact, the only problem is the engineering may be too good for older hands. I find myself using the Futur even though it does not deliver the same wonderful shave as the Vision because the pop off top on the Futur is easier too manage with stiff hands.

From what I have read, the reliability is the same and it is actually harder to get it apart. Taking it apart regularly to clean seems to be a necessary part of Vision ownership.

Doh. I thought the design might have been improved upon a bit. At least it doesn't have the tiny set screw that requires the world's smallest allen wrench like the old one did.

I don't know if I'll give it a try again. $140 is pretty steep. But that thing loaded with a Feather opened up almost all the way gave a mean shave. Looks like I'll stick with the Futur for now.

I have Vision 2000. I did not have the older model. The one that I have is VERY easy to take apart. It also has an easy gap adjustment which from my understanding the older version did not have or was hard to get to. I enjoyed mine very much and use it seldom now only because I like slants more at this point. I do take it out once in a while when I feel like shaving with the "jaws of life" I find maintenance to be just as easy as with any razor and I had no reliability issues. If you have any questions or need any pictures, let me know.

+1

It is a snap to disassemble and reassemble it. I tell you, from every bad thing I have read about the Vision, I keep expecting mine to break or fall apart. I've had mine for over a year now and it is as solid as ever and just keeps on giving me great shaves.
