Virtual Village Special

I have seen some reviews for the DeLong brush purchased from virtual village on the Bay but they now offer another silvertip brush. It has a wooden handle and looks pretty nice for a cheap brush.

Has anyone tried this brush or will I be the first?

Well I got one of these brushes and I am quite surprised at the feel of the brush. It has shed some hair for the first 2 shaves but only a few which seems commonplace.

The brush is nice and soft and as far as I can tell the hair is not cut to shape. The wood handle is very lightweight but functions very well.

This is a wonderful starter / intermediate brush.

Who says that just because its not 100+ bucks that a brush can't be awesome. I bought one of these puppies on ebay (black handle) I think it was only $15-18 new. I had my doubts, but when I got it I found I love it. I thought it would be a boar hair brush trying to pose for a badger hair...Nope. I see absolutely no need to go spend the big bucks for a high quality name brand when this brush is excellent. Now, AD may get the best of me after awhile of course, but for now I'm extremely happy with my on-the-whim purchase.

I got one off ebay about a month ago. Its a nice brush...feels good and performs well. The only negative is that it took a heck of a long time to get the scent of it. I own several other badger brushes, no big dollar ones, and none of them took more than a shave or two to ditch the smell. This one took weeks and weeks.

Don't have the wooden one but I do have a black handle and a white handle. Bought the white handle a year or so ago and was so impressed I bought the black handle a month or two ago.

They are fantastic value. I have a Shavemac, a Kent, the B&B special from a couple of years ago and several other decent quality brushes but I find I use the two cheap Chinese jobs more than any of the others.

Mine didn't have "the aroma" either!

Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I've got a Delong "black badger" and it's a great brush. Shed a few hairs at first, then it settled down. There was a little stink at first, but I used some baby shampoo on it and that ceased to be a problem. The faux ivory handle has enough heft to feel solid.

Doesn't most badger hair come from China, anyway?

I also bought this brush in black and I totally agree with you. However I just picked up a rooney vemillion and it blew me away. The brush feels so complete and it performed an amazing lather with little effort. The knot is denser and the hairs are softer but still hold their own.

I found that lathering with the rooney was a totally pampering experience. Now, is it worth the 100+ dollar difference in price? I think some guys will say definitely and others will say definitely not. Like most things that deal with wet shaving, to each his own. :thumbup1:

There is no doubt that many nice expensive brushed exceed the quality of these Shanghai Specials but for the price they can't be beaten.

I do agree that mine still smells funny. I imagine that the curing process in China is not quite up to par to the US and European standards. The day I got it I used shampoo and conditioner, followed by a swirl in each of the different soaps I have. Partly to get rid of the smell, and partly to see how each one lathered with the new brush.

I will make a formal review for the boards once I get the time.
