vintage gillette id and year , plating

hi all
old gillette i picked up at the weekend ,it was black and green , was it originaly brass or brass with a gold surface ,its great now its had a polish,found a split in the handle , can this be repaired?,not yet tried it out .
the number on it is k450137 . made in the usa.

Nice find! I'll take a stab at it (would like confirmation though).

From the Wiki, I think that's what became known as the Ball End Old Type (Wiki page here). Except that according to the serial number data (Wiki page here) it would be from 1919, pre-dating the name "Old Type". So it was originally called simply the "Gillette Razor".

Pretty sure these were generally plated either silver or gold. Again, confirmation is in order here. Great find though!

It is an Old type. The Old Type started as the Double Ring in 1903 or so and lasted when they ran out of parts in the mid to late '20's some time. The "Old Type" you're talking about is when they actually started stamping in the words in some of their cases to identify it from the newer razor types being made at the same time. If you simply say the Gillette razor the only thing it describes is who made it.
