Vintage AV score

Well a package was waiting for me when I got home today.:w00t: I ran inside and ripped it open. The bottle is real cool. Pebbled like a piece of ice and the blue lid is neat too. I opened it up, took a whiff, and ... nothing. Smells like alcohol and not much else. So I put some on. Still nothing. I compared it to new stuff to see if my sniffer was malfunctioning. Nope, the new stuff smells great. So in the end I got a cool bottle filled with faded AV.

Should I dump it and fill it with the good stuff?

Haha...I got the same bottle off the bay last week, too. Mine smelt very faint. I'm going to dump mine and fill it with the new stuff. I really don't use AV, but wanted to get the bottle.

I picked this up a while back:

and to me it smells pretty much the same as the current AV. I don't know how old it is though.

Of course you should dump it, and refill!! Didn't you make this purchase for the cool older style bottle anyway?

If you are really bargain savvy, you dump the contents, and refill with the Vi-John knockoff. :thumbup1:

I added 4 menthol crystals to it last night. Upon re-evaluation the smell is there, only faint, but now it has the kick of Osage Rub!

Cool bottles. Break the bat off the baseball player and it will look like every little league trophy I ever had.:biggrin1:

I saw another seller on E-Bay who had a large lot of these vintage bottles as a BIN, but I am not sure I want to pay around $12 shipped just for a fancier bottle. Out of everything I could decant into, I prefer the empty Spieck bottle the most.

Does the vintage Aqua Velva bottle have a standard shake spout, I don't like how messy the last produced glass container is to use?

Yep, it has the built in shaker. Same size as the current glass bottle. In fact the lids are interchangeable.

I've purchases those 80's AV bottles on the Bay. The bottles are nicer than current day versions so I spent the money on them for the cool factor. I couldn't' tell any differences in the product scent or performance.

The labels are paper so I'm not sure they will endure intact with multiple decant's/uses. I was thinking about trying to put a coating over the lapel to protect it.

Any suggestions from someone that has done that before?

I have not tried it yet, but I was looking to preserve the label too. I was thinking maybe some spray on acrylic?

Or perhaps some clear fingernail polish?

I await the suggestions from people who have tried this. :thumbup1:

I was thinking some kind of acrylic or polyurethane (if there is a difference) as well.

Nail polish would be a big hassle for such a a large area.

The other thing I was thinking about doing was taking one of the labels from a newer glass AV bottle, cutting out the logo and putting that on the old bottle.

Then I said to myself, "Self, get a life." But I'll be pondering this puzzle again soon.

Too late for all of us on that, isn't it?
