Van Der Hagen Boar Brush

Are there any other fans of this brush out there? :001_smile I find mine to give a great shaving experience. It softens very nicely if I presoak it 10 minutes or so before use. It works up a rich lather and feels great on my face. The construction seems sturdy enough. And at $7.99 plus tax at CVS Pharmacy, what more can I say...

I also own a Shea Moisture brand pure badger brush which I have no complaints about, like it a lot, but as odd as it may sound to some, I`m more inclined to reach for the Van Der Hagen. It goes great with my Van Der Hagen Deluxe soap. Long live Van Der Hagen, a fine company located in Texas. :001_smile

I had one and it lost a lot of hair and it's shape pretty quickly. I also have a vintage Surrey brush that looks identical to the VDH that has held up magnificently. Van der Hagen bought out or acquired Surrey at some point and either the quality was better or I just lucked out and got a really good one.

Mine is holding up great thus far, have been using it about two months. I suspected that there would be plenty of dissention, as I recall reading other complaints about this brush. Hey but if I`m the only fan, that fine. I can live with...:wink2:

I have the "Deluxe" VDH boar. Also got it at CVS. I really enjoy it. It's great with any soap and does not shed at all. Actually blooms if I scrub it a little against a towel after using it.

Great, cheap brush.

I have used used one for almost 2 years now and it's holding up nicely.
I cleaned it this summer and wow. Maybe the older green handled ones are a higher quality

I've had green and white. The problem is the shedding - I confess I rarely reach for it, but it doesn't seem to stop shedding.

Otherwise, it's actually a comfortable handle and a scrubby little brush that lathers OK.

yea I kinda like the handle for as cheap as it is. I thought about pullin the knot and putting a tgn one in

I buy this brush for a friend I have to tell you can shave only with the brush , the hair are so sharp and hard

I have both brushes and the boar shed some on me. I really like the shea moisture brush but it is a little floppy.

Picked up one of these 10 years ago for $4. Has served me well everyday. Doesn’t shed, doesn’t smell, works well.

VDH boar was my first shaving brush. I tried breaking it in but it kept shedding and the scritch didn't go away, unfortunately.

This was my first brush. Well broken in and in regular rotation.

The Van der Hagen Boar Brush I had (that was part of a brush, soap & mug set that my parents gave me for Christmas one year) sat around unused for a long time while I used cartridge razors and canned shave gel. When I did start using the Van der Hagen boar , after I switched over to shaving with a DE razor and finished off the canned goop, it shed horribly. I continued to use it (picking boar hair off of the soap puck and off of my face) until the center of the knot fell out leaving a halo of boar hair around the outside.

After my experience and hearing about similar stories I would not recommend Van der Hagen to anybody. There is so much out there that is so much better quality for about the same price and even more that blows it away for somewhat more.

I probably had 3 of them over the years, mostly under the Surrey label. I remember one had a blonde wooden handle and it really broke in nicely. For many many years they were essentially the only brushes available in shops in the U.S. Until 10 or so years ago I really didn't take great care of my brushes. I usually only owned one, so it was often damp for days and days without ever fully drying. I'd rinse the lather out of it but that was about it for maintenance.
