Valet Auto Strop Aggressiveness

I've recently received a 1912 Valet Auto strop. After modifying a single edge razor to fit and trying to shave, I find that it isn't cutting.
The comb is in contact with the blade. Should there be a gap between comb and blade and if so how much of one and how would I go about setting it?

Another question, what is the thickness of the strop? Mine came without one but I intend to make one to fit, I have a leather splitter so I'll just need to know what to set it for.

Any way you can post a picture to show the blade in position? That would help a lot.
