using a straight on E-W/W-E growth

i saw one or two threads regarding this issue, and they had somewhat discouraging information. the hair on my neck grows outwards horizontally from my adams apple, which it seems is not the most straight razor friendly. anyone with insight regarding this issue? ive been using a DE with pretty good results, but i think i would like to try a straight.

What exactly is the issue? Is the problem, you are having a tough time figuring out how to go WTG with a straight on your neck?

I have the same issue, and I tried to figure out how to do ATG. I gave up. I do a N-S XTG and a S-N XTG. It provides a quite acceptable shave for me.

+1

I would also like to add that you can get super close results with a S-N XTG stroke using a straight. I usually do a N-S, then a S-N, and then another S-N with some horizontal movement in the blade (do be careful doing this ). This gets me smoother than I could get with a DE on my neck, although I didn't use the DE for nearly as long as I have been using a straight (which also isn't very long yet ).

the issue is if i dont go WTG on my neck which grows E-W, i get terrible ingrowns. however ive heard that straights are more forgiving in this sense.

Got it, my neck hair grows that same way. I do exactly the same thing as Chris and Paul. That said, I used this method with a DE and got the same good results.

One thing you might try, which is pretty doable with a straight on/around the neck, is a cross between XTG and WTG ... think NE-SW / NW-SE or SE-NW / SW-NE rather than a pure N-S or S-N pass.

Try pointing the blade at an angle from chin to ear, then moving the blade in the direction you want, but with a slight arc with the point moving faster. As you get further down the neck, I think the angle needs to increase to get the blade in there.

Most of my neck hairs grow that direction as well. Just like Savantstrike said, I get really good shaves just going XTG (S-N or N-S) and no ingrown hairs.

i tried a e-w & w-e one day and put a slice in the drool line that lasted a week (it was clean and healed quickly). i had tried it a few times before with decent results, but it is dangerous. never again.
