DE razor blades compared to straight razors?

G'day Gents, I am figuring out my next purchase of DE blades and have a question that may help me decide. Like many here I have wiry facial hair that twists and turns in all directions. I find using a slant razor cuts down somewhat the discomfort of the geometry of my hairs as they grow back. I have used a straight razor in the past and always enjoyed the thicker grind blades (wedges and quarter hollow) vs the more hollow ones. I think it was the thicker blade, while sharp, didn't cut the hair too finely resulting in a more comfortably result. This may be not accurate but it does feel this way to me?

I'm wondering if their are different blades thickness for DE razor blades? I currently use Astra SP (green), Derbys and Personna (comfort coated). Are there DE blades that have "thicker" edges by comparison? If so, what blades are they? If not, and if you have a blade recommendation based on my question if would be appreciated greatly.

My shaving issues stems not from the removal of the hair but in the growing back of it. There is redness and bumps, especially if I don't shave regularly which is counter productive to when I need to heal my skin. Some aftershave splashes help but I'm hoping being thoughtful of each step will be me closer to both a good looking shave but a more sustainable one too. Thanks for your time and attention. regards

subbing to the thread for interest. I love heavy grind straights and it would be very interesting finding a DE blade that cuts like one. I will note - GEM and AC do not cut like heavy grind straights to me. I would love to see if there is a DE option.

Hey hey!

So I also prefer wedges and quarter grinds on my straights, always have. That said I'm not sure you'd find a DE blade that cuts like one, they are different animals in the same forest, so to speak.

BUT, have you considered the actual DE razor, rather than the blade. Wedge and heavier grinder straights likely don't flex much, if at all, while fully hollow ground blades may experience some flex. So what about a DE razor thst clamped a blade close to the cutting edge? That would reduce flex of the DE edge.

Just a thought. I'm sure much more scientifically minded folks will be a long shortly to help.

Yes, they come in different thickness. Most are either 90 or 100 microns. A few are 85, 95, or 101.6 (0.004" imperial spec). I have vintage blades as thin as 60 microns.

The American Personna Comfort Coated, the German Wilkinson Sword Classic are good ones. The Personna is 0.004", and the Wilkinson Sword Classic might be as well.

So I've got some old three hole DE blades made by Wade and Butcher, bet you those would feel different! They are thick and chonky blades. You could find something like that and give it a whirl for science. I jest of course, don't do that they would very likely tear your face to ribbons, but they are certainly of thicker stock than the modern blades.
