What's new

Used the Old Type again.

Those things are very unforgiving, but at least this time I didn't come close to death. That angle is HUGE and I have always heard they were made to convert straight users, and I sure feel like one because of how slow I have to go!

I've been shaving with a ball end Old Type exclusively for about a month and I really like it. You're right though, they are very unforgiving. I feel like finding the right angle with this razor is pretty straight forward but it let's you know quickly when you get it wrong. You'll get faster with practice.

One thing to note in case you weren't aware: you need to make sure that the blade is straight and centered after you load it because there is a little play in the fit. These razors were designed for the old style blades with just the three holes in them and modern blades don't always fall right into perfect alignment.

Tony, I spent a good while making sure it was straight! haha. Justin, it's a ball-end.

I loooove by Old Type, awesome smooth shave every time. Practicing for a month with the precise angle required for the Feather AS-D1 helped make using the Old a breeze.

Regular, I almost gave up! I can tell it will be worth it, it's just...ouch that first time. The chin is deadly, though, it seems like NO angle works.

Stick with it fellas. It's been my primary (9/10 shaves) for the last 3 years. It will reward you, if you put in the effort. It doesn't tolerate lapses in attention or technique, nor is it entirely enjoyable with certain blades.

i just used an old type for the first time a couple of days ago, and have used it twice. I actually found it to be an incredibly smooth, easy shaving razor. I can definitely feel the blade, but I haven't had a problem with it biting me at all. It just may very well be my favorite razor, but more testing is needed.

I had the same experience. Mine is very gentle and gives me an excellent BBS shave. I've only had one tiny weeper and that was from getting sloppy on my lower lip during the fourth shave of a blade.

I haven't tried any other blades with it yet, so it might be different with another blade, but Astra SP in my old type makes for a very smooth and gentle shave. I have an EJ89 on the way and look forward to comparing the two.

It might also be worth noting that this is my only DE razor currently and I switched over from a shavette, so my definition of "gentle" could be vastly different.

I've tried about 17 different blades in about 12 different razors and the Old Type with an Astra SP (based on just one shave so far) has been one of my best shaves yet. it was surprising because I'm not a huge fan of Astras but since I have over 100 of them, I'm trying them in all my razors to see if they work in one of them. They certainly do in the Old Type. The only other blade I used in it was a Ladas and it worked quite well, but not as smooth as an Astra.

See, I'm used to a Tech and this is NOTHING like the Tech in feel for me. But, I'm gonna keep trying and figure it out

With good technique and practice, you will come to enjoy it. They are actually not that aggressive compared to the Joris, FaTip, Tradere, R41, etcetera.
Once your technique had improved with it, you may have the courage to try the open-comb Aristocrats which are fantastic shavers. Enjoy the Old Type.

The Old Type is awesome!

Yes, I bled a bit at first, but after I got used to it there was no going back. Check out the Single Ring as well. A different feel, slightly smoother, but also a very quick shaver.

Gillette nailed it right out of the gate I thiink.

The Tech is a rather gentle and forgiving razor so no wonder you like it. Of the few razors that I own the New would be the next step in aggro after the Tech and the Old Type is a beast which must be handled with care but it can give a great shave.

My favorite razor is the Fatboy as I can change the settings according to how my face feels. Today however ... as you have started this thread I will join you and shave with the Old Type.

:biggrin1:

I have used other razors now, including a Lady Gillette, Slant, GEM Junior, and one of those Yuma razors. I think it's closest to what the Yuma was for me. Not quite sure; the GEM is the easiest to use I'd say.

In my case the Yuma was a lot more aggressive than the Old Type. The Yuma felt like it was trying to take a skin graft off my face. I threw it away after one pass.

savages, was the blade aligned? It took me forever to align mine.

No it wasn't, but I didn't realize it until I started shaving that one side was harsher than the other. I decided I wasn't going to put up the hassle of aligning it for a $2.50 razor.

Very nice trade! I'm not a huge fan on TTO razors...the shape of the head seems to drag on my face for some odd reason. I've heard red tips rule, though. Enjoy!

I received mine in a PIF last week. It was/is my first DE razor (got an EJ89 on the way, as I mentioned before) and I was in love from the very first shave. Perhaps it's because I came from using a shavette, but I found it to be a very mild and smooth razor. My first shave with it was the best shave I'd ever had in my life. It clicked perfectly with an Astra SP blade and a nice cushion of Arko. I'm absolutely baffled as to how anyone could have a bad experience with it, but I guess it's just YMMV in action.

Plus, there's something uniquely awesome about shaving with a razor that was made before my great-grandmother was born.
