What's new

Used the Merkur Slant for a month now. my life has changed.

Dramatic title, I know, but this razor is incredible. I've suffered from ingrown hairs for so long that shaving has been miserable. I have become very skilled shaving but still get them about every other shave. I decided to try this razor and I am simply amazed. I can't even feel it cutting my beard. It leaves my skin smooth, with zero irritation, and I haven't had any signs of ingrowns. I can use it every day without irritation. I'm convinced that this is how every razor should be made. I can't see a downside and am baffled that people see this as a specialty razor that requires "great care." I can shave very casually with little attention and still get a great shave.

I'm also in the market for a slant myself. So I'm always interested in reading others' opinions on them

Leaning towards the 37c, mostly because I like its looks over the 39c. Which one is it you are using?

I have the 39C myself. Absolutely love it and it is my favorite. I too couldn't understand all the apprehension people express about it being so fearsome. I find that it is actually one of the easiest razors to shave with and it also solved my occaisonal ingrown hair and razor burn issue. As long as you shave with it as you would with any other DE razor that is in the medium range for efficiency I don't find any extra care is needed. In fact, my 37C HD and my Slim (both which are also great to shave with) require more attention and care to avoid problems.

Until earlier this year, the razor I used most often was a 34c but after getting a 37c, I don't want to use anything else. There may in fact be something better but I haven't found it and from the results I get with the slant, don't care to. It's a wonderful razor.

I, too have been "hooked" by the elegance and effortless efficacy of the slant. I just ordered an gold 37G. All the hype about them being dangerous is balderdash.

I'm another fan of the Slant. I find it to be a very efficient razor, and for me, turns a "meh" blade like a Deby into an "aha!" blade.

That it just plain looks cool doesn't hurt, either.

I find that Derbys do a fine job in mine as well.

Since receiving my 37C about a month ago... I have been a big fan of the slant razors. I get some incredible face and dome shaves.

WARHAWK

I love my 39c. If for whatever reason I have not shaved for most of the week it is my go to razor. I always try and use a Feather or a Med Prep and the whiskers get mowed down like grass.

Yep, a great razor. I've been using my Hoffritz Slant as a daily driver for well over a year now. Doesn't matter if there's a day of growth or several days growth it just slices everything away. The Slant also has a way of making just about any blade usable-I burned up many Derbies in that razor and had really good shaves. Like you, I've had a few bouts of ingrown and irritation problems and really noticed how the Slant will shave without creating those kinds of headaches-it really is a strong contender for people who are looking for help in this area. I suspect that this is due to the shaving edge being able to follow the contours of the face more easily.

I get amused when reading of how the Slant is perceived to be very aggressive and a tool of the Devil that requires much concentration to use well. I'd say it is efficient rather than aggressive and requires no special skill to use. Of course the Slant, like any DE, will bite if you're careless.:wink2:

I have a R41 so I am not intimidated. I am very intrigued about slants and I am thinking about purchasing one. I would like to understand the science behind the design a little more and if a vintage Hoffritz is better or equal to a modern Merkur.

I was also very apprehensive, but found that my EJ89 requires a little bit more attention than my 37C. I also feel my 37C is less aggressive than my Gillette NEW razors (solid handle and ball-end, both long comb). The only other razor that I have that is also smooth (although not quite as efficient) is my '67 Aristocrat (Gold Slim).

I'm a huge fan of the slants and own several. They make up pretty much my entire rotation, save for the occasional desire to try a new arrival :)

I am currently EAGERLY awaiting the return of my most prized slant - a Vintage Hoffritz. It went away for an extended vacation to Closecut61/Dave where it underwent an epidermis transplant. She should be back to me in the next week or so wearing and all-new Rhodium skin.... I may never shave with anything else again!

Bahhh who am I kidding. I need more razors :)
