Unknown German Open Comb Razor - A Beauty

Hi members,

here I want to introduce you one of my most beautiful safety razors of my litte collection.
It is an open comp razor but because it got no engravings, the manufacturer is unknown. I bought it with that nice wooden box with a coating of brown leather. Inside there is an imprint of a shop which was specialized in selling steelware made in Solingen and was located in Saarbrücken / Germany. That shop does not exist anymore and I do not know when it was closed. So I got no further informations than that. Looking at the font which was used for the imprint and the design of the razor, I think he was produced between 1900 and 1920.

The razor is more on the aggressiv side and wants to be handled carefully. I could not shave myself everyday with him. But to kill three days or older whiskers, than he is doing a pretty good job.

Weight: 44 g = 1.5520543oz

That is a unique and beautiful piece. The head geometry looks very similar to a Gillette Old Type 102 so I would guess that it shaves very similar.

Verr nice, thank you for sharing.

Very nice!
I wonder if that '+' cross on the handle indicates that it was Swiss made, but sold in Germany?

I literally gasped when I scrolled down to the picture. My wife looked over wondering what it was and then rolled her eyes when I showed her.

It's an exquisite looking beast. Love the attention to detail on the ball end of the handle where it mirrors the ring at the top. Someone really put a lot of care into it.

Is the checkering paint or very thinly applied enamel? Couldn't be enamel could it?

Beautiful. Just beautiful. Congratulations! Great to know it's in the hands of someone who appreciates it.

Hi members,

first of all thank you so much for your kind posts. I am very pleased about that. :001_wub:

Great eye, but I would wager that one of the black squares simply wore away over time.

That`s right, some of the little squares are lost.

Yep, seems to be enamel. This are all little squares made of enamel which were individual applied with glue. They put really a lot of time and care to make that razor.

Oh yes, I really do. That razor will stay till my last breath. :biggrin1:

Very nice. Unique looking razor, Lets name it the watchamacallit ?

+1

Alexander, wow, that sure is a beautiful razor! When are we going to see it on the SOTD?

Soon my friend, soon. :001_smile

Very nice, and unique, razor. If you've shaved with it , is the shave as nice as the razor looks?

What a striking, unusual razor! The design does look very similar to the Old Type.

An address for the manufacturer, Gebrüder Lang (Lang Brothers), in Solingen, Germany, is listed in this archive of German razor makers. According to Google Maps, there is now a Starbucks at the address shown on the case, Bahnhofstraße 60, Saarbrücken.

Wow...thanks a lot for your time putting into that research. Great informations!:001_cool:
Only that you will find today a Starbuck at the address and not a shop to buy fine shaving stuff is truly sad.

Regards, Alexander.
