For certain, you MUST keep us posted with pics of this project.
That's an honorable undertaking, it being your dad's.

yeah, if it were not his i wouldnt be bothered with the mountain of work it will be.

Ive taken a fair bit of surface rust off since I took those pics with some CLR, im also going to need to pop off the handles somehow, because the rust is pretty wild underneath :frown:

Quite an undertaking. Hope it turns out well. Even if it is not a perfect restore, since it is a memorabilia thing, restoring it to the poiint where it has some blemishes but the rust is all removed would still look great and give a feeling of the age. Then you could protect it with something like renaissance wax; that would be really nice.

If you have a belt grinder it should turn out great and it shouldn't take long either.

The rust doesn't look too bad and there is plenty of metal to work with.

Done lots of axes this way and almost all of them turn out great (a couple have been rusted beyond repair)

Looks like it'll give a really smooth shave.

... sorry, I know it was obvious, but I couldn't resist.

Nice work, dunn!

Look forward to seeing more of this project.

A fellow in town here had an old axe and machete both covered in rust ,the machete was the most badly off with under pitting under the handle ,which by the way was home made held on with old bolts the handle was hanging off.
I did the axe up by removiong the rust and putting an edge on the old girl that would pop hairs, under all the rust the axe turned out to be an old plumb ,great find , but the machete was even better . I removed the handle then most of the rust ,under which I found the Australian army stamp ,I replaced the handle with parachute chord and blued the blade to kill the active rust ,its now takes pride of place on the wall over the fire place
Kind regards Peter
