Trying to start my son off right...

In the last year, my 15 year old son started to shave some hairs above his top lip. I think he snagged the Fusion that one of his sisters uses on her legs when in the shower! It's funny to hear him deny it to his Mom and sisters when they want to tease him about it! When I noticed that he had shaved, I went out and got him 3 twin blade disposables for a buck at the CVS, a $10 tube of C.O. Bigelow from Bath and Body Works, and a boar brush for a couple bucks from Walgreens. This was to hold him until I could get a proper razor for him. Well, it arrived today! I ordered a Merkur 1904 from West Coast shaving Sunday and they sent it Priority Mail via USPS. He also has a tub of John Varvatos shave gel that I picked up at the local TJ Maxx for $9.99. He can surely use this gentle gel to slice the light hairs he has now, and progress to the brush and creams later. So for about $50, he is set for a long time! He can experiment with the sampler pack razors and Derbys I have stocked up on as I check them out, too. I hope he likes it!

I always chuckle when I hear about a kid starting to shave....mainly because of my cousin Tony. You see, Tony had a full beard by the time he was 15....

I have two things to say about this...

1. LMFAOOOO!!!
2. Fusion?! KILL IT! KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Good to hear you got him started off the right way. Wish my old man would have given me that much of a good start. I had to learn it all the hard way on my own.

That Fusion monster would cover the entire area above the upper lip before you even moved the razor.

I have no idea how you would shave in tight places with that thing, from what I see.

Only thing I can figure is that the trimmer blade on the back of the cart is for use on yer top lip. Those 5 blades never worked well on my top lip.

The cart blade razors are pretty darned good for shaving yer head. Best head shave I ever got was with a Schick Quattro that absolutely tore up my face.

I wish my dad had started me out with a good DE back in the mid '80s. I got started out with a brand new Norelco overpriced ***. I then progressed to Gillette Sensor, then regressed to the Mach III and Fusion and Quattro.
Then I progressed to DE and SE safety razors.
If I had started out with the '69 Gillette Super Adjustable or EJ DE87 that I have now, I never would have used cartridge razors.

Ahh, youth. That time when you think Edge gel is the holy grail of shaving lube.

Glad to hear you're starting your son off with a real shave. At least now if he opts for carts it'll be a choice.

When I first told my dad I had switched to DE the first thing he asked was how many cuts I get. He still doesn't believe me that I get better shaves now.

Yeah, I thought I could do a little better than my Dad. "Here's $20," he said. "Get a razor (TracII) and some shaving cream (Gillette Foamy). From here on, you're on your own." That led to 25+ years of experimenting with cartridges, foams, gels, and electrics, before arriving at DE shaving.

That was about my experience too. It's nice that you got him started off right--definitely something that he'll never forget. Even if he wanders off into the thickets of multiblade razors when he goes off on his own, he'll always have something to come back to.

Yeah, I just kinda started using the extra disposables my dad had around and his Barbasol (the king of canned goop). Didn't really want for a better shave, I could have cared less and apparently I have tough skin. Then through a series of fortunate events, I arrived at DE shaving. I'm never looking back!

same here. when i told Dad I had found a website that promoted DE shaving as better than Cartridge/Electric he said "well there's websites for pretty much any theory isn't there". :glare:

it's a shame. I'm 32, Dad's 57 and he uses an electric. no amount of convincing will get him to try DE shaving.

luckily, my brother who's 30 is intrigued by a DE and should be making his first foray into it soon. C'MON BRO!

I had a full beard at 17. I was the one buying the booze, because none of my friends had convenient older siblings, lol.

My dad bought me a can of Edge after I got given a free sample Sensor Excel at the PNE when I was like 13. I'm not sure I want to think about how long I continued to use Edge for after that... Dad's an electric man, and so are both grandpas, so I guess I can't really blame him. Even now he's too impatient to use anything other than an electric though.

Sounds like you and your kid are off to a good start.

I started with an electric face mangler.
:thumbdown
Good job on starting him out right.
He'll be on this board in no time.

I actually got my dad to make the switch back to real shaving cream. I think he still uses the BIC disposables.

I'm still working on my stepson. He changed from Edge gel to Arbonne, which at least has more natural ingredients, but he says it's a complete "system" and doesn't want to try the brush/cream.

I did convince him to try out the alum block. Slowly but surely...

wish my step dad was like you.

Why do I get the feeling that that was what happened with MOST of our generation?

I was given an electric and bottle of AV at 12 (when I started in Air Cadets and was told to shave). 4 years later I was using a Mach 3, then switched to a Quattro... then grew a beard for the better part of 7 years... went back to the quattro, and started looking for a cheaper way to shave.

I got a "good luck" when my dad found out I was looking at switching to either a straight or DE.

I wish you all the best in the world with this.

Both the 16 year old and 14 year old have been introduced to DE shaving, but no matter how hard I try they keep going back to the electric.

Why ...."Because it's faster Dad !"

Sheesh...kids today, everything has to be fast and instantaneous !!!

I remember my father giving me a Gillette Blue disposable and a can of Palmolive classic (aerosol version) and telling me I'd soon work it out. The sink looked like a massacre had taken place by the time I was finished.
