Tried a new soap with odd results

As I mentioned in a recent thread here:

http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=167187

I've switched from cream (JM Frasers) to soap (Institut Karite). I liked the soap experience so much I decided to try another one. FYI: I have very sensitive skin so I always need to find products that are mild and either unscented or very little scent.

This morning I tried Honeybee Sue's unscented. This is a poured glycerin type soap (a first for me). It was easy to load up on the brush and lathered OK with maybe a bit more work than usual. It seemed fine on my face and I set into shaving. I'm either a bit slow or I make my lathers a bit dry, so I often need to refresh the lather on my face, especially on the second pass. That was definitely happening with this lather, moreso than usual. Then, halfway through my second pass, the unshaved lather on the rest of my face completely dissapeared!! I even ran my fingers over that skin and there was no detectable substance at all, just soft smooth skin. It really seems like my face "absorbed" the lather??

Anyway, I applied some more lather and finished up my shave.

For a first use of this product, I'd say that it did fine although maybe not as nice as IK. The disappearing lather trick was definitely odd -- Maybe I should have used more product?

What temperature water are you using to make the lather? Some soaps do horribly with warmer water. Also, is your water hard?

I use hot water on my brush and for making the lather, so that could be a clue. I use "lukewarm" water for rinsing the razor and splashing my face (until the final cold rinse). I can certainly try using cooler water, and probably a bit more product also :001_rolle

Our water is fairly soft here, so that should not be the problem.

I would start by using more product. I had a similar situation in the summer with Gentlemen's Best soap, by all accounts a great latherer, but it disappeared from my brush and face by the second pass. I just loaded more soap to the brush and it worked like a charm. Nice, rich stable lather, with enough for 4 passes. Honeybee Spa soaps are good, and inexpensive, so you should not hesitate to load up.

This morning I loaded up more product (about 2x from yesterday) and also used more water (somewhat cooler) to make the lather. That's more like it! :thumbup1: The HBS soap is different to lather and use than the IK, but I'm getting the hang of it. I'll be rotating HBS and IK to see which one really works best for me. I'm guessing IK, but trying to keep an open mind:001_rolle
