Treet SE blade question

How fast can carbon steel rust?

I used a Treet SE blade for the first time this morning. Until now, the only SE blades have used are the Walgreens Personnas and the "Amazon" Gems, which as far as I can tell are identical. The Treet was very sharp, and I got a first rate shave.

Since I understand that these are not stainless, afterward I rinsed it off, then dipped it in alcohol, prior to laying it on a paper towel to dry. As I took it out of the alcohol, I saw that the sides of the blade were discolored, some brownish specks that definitely weren't there when I started the shave. The edge of the blade was not discolored.

I don't know if the specks were there just before I dipped it in the alcohol. Could it be some reaction with the metal, or could this really be rust, 15 or 20 minutes after I took it out of the package? That would be discouraging. I was counting on at least 3 shaves per blade.

I do the same thing you did, pat dry and dip in alcohol, and usually end up with spots and streaks on the sides. Seems to be the nature of the beast. I can usually only get three shaves with a blade and it's done, and I only shave about half my face due to having a full circle beard.

as careful as i have been with them, i have had a Treet blade oxidize while soaking (in the razor) in the sink with my brush. needless to say, carbon steel blades are tempermental, and i have since not repeated the pre-shave warming/soaking :001_rolle

The rust starts to takes hold pretty fast, at least that’s what I’ve noticed. Personally I find the non-stainless steel blades too much of a hassle to use, plus I only get about 3 shaves out of them. I still have a few left that I am working thru and after that it will be all stainless for me.
