Travelling with wet shaving supplies?

I travelled between Hobart and Melbourne (by air) over the weekend, and it got me wondering, what do others take in their "travel" kit, especially when only travelling with carry-on luggage?

I can completely understand not packing a straight razor in carry-on luggage, but what about replacement DE blades? I packed a single replacement DE blade by stacking 2 blades together in my razor, which would look like a single blade (or I could just make up some story about it being a "new twin-blade DE razor").

Do you take your normal shave soap, or pack a small tube of cream or a shave stick? What about aftershave or cologne? And do you stick to that "100mL liquid limit" or not?

DO NOT bring blades in your carryon. It's not worth the potential and likely hassle of dealing with airport security. Either mail yourself some, or leave yourself some with a reliable friend, or buy some at CVS/Walgreens whenever you need them.

My travel kit contains the following:

  • Travel Tech
  • 3/1
  • Tabac shave stick
  • 103 mL bottle of AV Ice Sport
  • 15 mL bottle of Tommy Bahama by Tommy Bahama

Do you have the equivalent of a TSA down under in the Land of OZ?.
In the states DE blades in carry on are definite verboten.
Check shave wiki to see if there's an entry re domestic travel for you.

Dammmit, it's going on summer there now, right?

Whoops! Didn't even notice OP is outside the US. Please ignore my CAPS LOCK if you aren't under blade restrictions.

I haven't been to the US, so I don't know all the rules there, but I have heard the horror stories  I'd describe airport security here as "annoying but not over-bearing" - laptops need to be out of bags, liquids are limited to 100ml containers or something like that, but shoes only need to be taken off if they set off the metal detector (mine tend to, so I always take them off before I go through).

They didn't have any problems with my DE razor plus fitted blade, they probably see them fairly regularly. In fact, they were more interested in another guy's can of goop than my razor

I guess if you're travelling with only carry-on luggage, you're probably only planning on being gone for 2, maybe 3 days, so you should only really need 1 extra blade maximum. That was where my idea of putting 2 blades in the razor came from.

And yes, it's coming into summer now - already getting heatwaves in Melbourne and Adelaide, and a lot of people are thinking it's going to be even worse with bushfires this summer.

Mmm, didn't know that I was allowed to bring my blades on the plane... Will do next time!

Me neither.

I'm in Melbourne now and didn't want to risk taking a blade through Hobart "International" Airport Security.....:001_tt2:

Even though I had an overnight bag, put it into checked luggage, and intend to leave my blade in Sunny Melbourne and carry my carry on back home.

Very interesting.......

I'd be very surprised if DE blades are actually allowed for us. Our guys mightnt be as millitant as the TSA, but at the end of the day its still smuggling a razor onto a plane.

What I've always done when I travel is take along a smaller bag and just check it in. I know, it is a bit of a hassle, but its only a brief time. I just pick up the bag when it comes through and I'm off. That way I'm sure I'll always have what I need. Some people might not want to take the extra time, but for me its worth it. :thumbup1:

Don't take this as gospel, I sure I have read somewhere in a similair thread that:

SR's are a definate no-go, mind you would you really want to tempt fate and shave with are SR on a plane!!!

DE blades if in a razor are okay, DE blades out of a razor no-go.

The things I take in cabin luggage is a toothbrush and paste. Even on longhaul flights.

On the other hand, maybe I was just lucky?

Maybe the security at Hobart were too bored, and the security at Melbourne were too busy to notice? Or maybe DE blades mounted in a razor are actually allowed? I've never had an issue taking a cartridge razor through, maybe security thought the DE was a cartridge? Or maybe the stricter rules only apply to international flights, not domestic?

The actual text on my booking reads:

"For security reasons, all knives, sharp objects or cutting implements of any kind and any length, whether of metal or other material, knitting needles, and sporting goods, must be packed in your Checked Baggage" - on the other hand, they generally allow items for "personal grooming".

You could always find out and discard the blade if questioned (along with grovelling apologies).

I'm kind of curious now.

Here's what the TSA website (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm) lists as prohibited items for carry-ons:
"Razor-Type Blades - such as box cutters, utility knives, razor blades not in a cartridge, but excluding safety razors."

Razor blades not in a cartridge are specifically prohibited. Safety razors are allowed, but I would not try to take a blade loaded in safety razor - at least, not in the US. Can't comment on rules in other countries.

I travelled last week, and opted to take an old TracII type razor with fresh blades in my carry-on. The AoS travel kit came in very handy, and the cheapo brush they included worked wonderfully with the AoS unscented cream. And, I really liked the AoS unscented ASB.

What it really comes to is a question of timing and logistics.....:001_tongu

IMHO, for all flights, shave before flight (ie at home), pack shaving kit in checked baggage, get on plane . If worse comes to worst and you have a meeting to go to at the end of a long haul (8+ hours) flight, shave in the airport toilets after picking up your checked baggage.

You will probably still looked wrecked anyway :wink2:

I don't think the issue is needing to shave on the plane. I think many, like myself, avoid checking baggage at all costs. I have (luckily) gotten away with carrying DE blades on, but this was discussed ad nauseum in an earlier thread (can't find it now), and the general concensus was that they are not allowed--regardless whether they are in the DE razor or not.

i am traveling tomorrow.....a rarity. i figure to play it safe too....packing a fusion and can of edge gel.
am also packing a sample size of Skin Food.

I'm on a cruise right now that required a flight down to San Juan. We just checked a bag with the shaving goodies. I hate checking luggage because they always break or steal something, but sometimes it's unavoidable. FWIW, I've flown a few times with a pack of Feathers in my carry-on and they didn't care at all.

I actually use a M3 Turbo :(

Ditto.

Travel by road, I'll take two straights and a strop, my travel brush, stick of Arko (last trip I tossed in a tub of GFT Limes),
sample tube of Skin Food, Ogallala AS, and a bottle of Bigelow Elixer. Mach-3 for the headshave.

By air, if I'm going carry-on only, I just leave the straights and strop at home.
