Travel Brush

Krona Kruiser recently gave me a travel brush in need of a new knot and some love, I was and am very excited about this gift because I had been wanting one of these old turnback style travel brushes and this was a fine example, thanks Krona Kruiser! I will post the before pics and after pics minus bloom shots for now because it needs to fully cure first before I use it. I set the 16mm TGN finest badger knot at 40mm, should be a fun little travel brush.

Before: Boar hair (shedding)

That's is AWESOME! If you can post a pic next to a Wee for scale and knot comparison.

Funny because I posted some data on that exact comparison between the Wee Scot and the TGN 16mm finest privately to another member who was interested. Here's a pic of the wee scot next to a vintage gillette travel brush that Bob Farvour restored for me with the same knot that Taco8slo has:

I was curious about the differing characteristics between the two.

Wee Scott-16mmx35mm, weight 19g, weight when wet 25g
Gillette/TGN-16mmx46mm, weight 29g, weight when wet 37 grams

Note that the Gillette "seemed" to hold onto the water while sitting on the scale while with the Wee Scott it continued to sort of leak slowly out of the brush. No judgment here because that could be good or bad.

I then loaded each brush for exactly 30 seconds on a puck of DR Harris Arlington in a bowl after which they weighed:
Wee Scot-23g , Gillette/TGN-35g
I should have also weighed the bowl before and after the loading of each brush. Then I would have known approximately what the h2o displacement was and the amount of soap, but that's what happens when a history major attempts to get empirical data.

After this, I used each brush on one of the sides of my face. Both had plenty of lather after only 30 seconds, but I noticed that the TGN knot gave up a lather that was slightly creamier whereas the wee scot's would have benefited from another drop or three of water. Not a huge difference, but noticeable. The other noticeable thing was that the wee scot had significantly more backbone and in comparison to the TGN was more precise in the application of the lather.

Finally, this TGN/Gillette is my dedicated travel brush and it works great. You're going to be happy.

Thanks for the encouragement! Oakeshott, thanks for the picture and info, good stuff. FL shaver, thanks as well for the picture. I bet there are a bunch of us here with travel brush restores containing the 16mm TGN finest knot. I think it may become my go to travel brush, though I haven't tried it yet, I love the TGN finest hair and this brush is so small and I dig the turnback style.

I used the brush today, you guys were right, I very much enjoyed it. Face lathered some RR Classic and it worked like a charm, the lower loft gave it some really nice scrub due to the extra backbone. Had plenty of lather for my shave. I'm always surprised at how much I like these TGN finest knots, they are right up there among my favorite knots, soft and scrubby! As an added bonus, due to the smaller knot, the hairs dried extremely fast.

I like both of those travel brushes, they look great with their new hair, they seem to be difficult to find as well.
