ToBS Splash or Balm

Except for some AV diluted with witch hazel, I haven't worn AS or cologne since college, so I don't have a clue about today's aftershaves. My usual AS is witch hazel. As I am in the midst of SCAD and loving the scents, I thought it might be a good time to try an AS for times my wife and I go out. For starters I'd like to try an AS or balm similarly scented to ToBS Sandalwood cream (or Mr Taylor) that was lightly scented but that lasted a couple of hours. Should I go with a splash or balm? My concern (probably wrong) is that the splash may be too strong leading to my wife complaining it's giving her a headache if in a closed car and that the balm scent may fade too quickly. Any suggestions or comparisons between the two?

I have TOBS Shaving Shop Balm (more of a gel and a little goes long way). The scent is just like the cream, but it is a bit strong and sticks around for a good, long time, at least to my nose.
