To Fix a Senator

I was PIF'd this very generously by Jay aka DrColossus11, I like it a lot, im good with loving it as it is, but am a bit curious since i have ownership of the poor guy how much love would this thing need to resurrect it from its current state(lol get it), back to its original glory, plating aside im more interested in its internals,...
Anyone repair these things ?, are they repairable at all ?, with regards to this type of razor (TTO) i have no clue
$IMG_0993.jpgas you can see when you open the doors the handle will drop shutting them again, simply supporting it in the hand means i can get a blade in okay, and when its turned closed it hold the blade snuggly and behaves just fine
$IMG_0994.jpg$IMG_0995.jpg$IMG_0996.jpg$IMG_0999.jpg
the teeth seem straight to me, just some plate loss, so maybe down the road i can look into some plating on this guy, if i can get it back into shape

Replate it first, then if it's just the barrel coming out that's the issue, some epoxy should take care of it. It seems like the OC bar is uneven too but it is totally worth looking into fixing.

As always Alex, thank you for the look up,

Krona, do you mean the OC bar is uneven with relation to the doors ?, that may be just the picture, though the larger chunky end teeth seem to be bent slightly down as well, but they arnt so uneven they look all that bad to me, not sure i would want to risk breaking them off by trying to bend the old metal back

this may show it better, just got other end on shot lined up and camera died,.. and for the life of me i dont know where i set the case with extra battery down, and since charger is in there im boned for pics tonight but you can see better here$IMG_1002.jpg$IMG_1003.jpg$IMG_1004.jpgthe first pic may look off because thats unscrewed upen, when the handle drops it pulls doors shut but uneven, once its threaded closed as in above, it seems to line up okay, its tough to see the end teeth, and how minor they are out in these pics, the one i was about to take when camera died showed it better _palm smack_

The upper collar is just an interference fit into the top of the handle tube. When the TTO is turned, the center rod length increases, and instead of pushing the doors open it pushes the tube out of the collar. A similar thing can happen, as Alex noted, when the TTO retaining crimp needs re-crimping.

In this case, there is no crimp involved in the upper tube and your TTO knob appears to be properly retained. Some marine-grade (waterproof) clear epoxy, mixed and applied to the inside of the upper tube should do the trick. Just be careful not to epoxy the center rod or let it drip down into the TTO knob area. A little goes a long way!

Thanks brad, ill leave it as is right now then to see just how much i love the little guy as im not sure on what the epoxy would do during a replate, though if i like it well enough im going to have a look down that road in the near future, i think its time to give this little guy a months worth of a chance to see just how much i give back to her, cause i do like it form the few times i have used it

Like Brad said, Epoxy it but hold it upside down so the Epoxy dont go into the Shaft, use a lite dab and let it set, it should hold it for life...in all honesty i would buy a cheap one and then replate it.

You dont think this is capable of replateing alex ?, im sure i could find a sheraton, but im not so sure i would run across another one of these, specially cheap lol, plus i think it would be groovy to recover one from the grave, if it turned out i didnt fall in love with this i think i would pif it out to someone who could, since that is how i came about it

Epoxy it, turn it upside down, place a dab on the part, let it set, then replate it....i just sold one for under 40 bucks free shipped to UK.

cool, cant wait to get going using this thing for the next little while,.. i didnt want to jump right into it till i could give it some focus (although i did give it two quick passes when i first got it), but i have nothing but time for it now
I have high hopes for it

Unless the epoxy is on the outer surface it won't have any effect on a replate. Since a good replater removes the old plating and polishes the razor's surface, any epoxy that splooges out of the repair will be gone by then!

Just wasn't sure what temp the replate took place at was worried it would melt the epoxy and have it gum up inside the razor during the process

I too have a Senator with 4 bent teeth on the ends. It doesn't seem to affect the shave as far as I can tell. So even though it bothers me from an appearance point of view, I'm not messing with it. It shaves great.

I love my Senator, but I love my Aristocrat more. Senators, Sheratons, and Aristocrats are my favorite vintage razors. I wouldn't trade my Senator for 100 Fat Boys. They're fantastic shavers.

Lol i was about to go shave,... about half way thru washing my face i remember i have food on the grille lmao

The aristocrat is almost same razor just with no OC, and english made ? or is the bar the only difference ?

The early Aristocrat are TTO Open Combs. I have an Open Comb and a Closed Comb. The Closed Comb gives nowhere as good a shave as the Open Comb one. The TTO Aristocrat OC was my Holy Grail Razor honestly. I missed out on many of them and finally found one, and it's one of my top 4 razors I own now. I have thought about selling my Sheraton and Senator, but I hate to break up the Triplets.
