What's new

Thought I won an aristocrat, ended up being a diplomat, who knew

After a crazy long and stressful day (5hrs of driving & 12 hrs onsite) I got home to find my recent aristocrat ebay win in my mailbox.

Well upon closer inspection I come to find out it's actually a diplomat, which is nice as it's my first diplomat, and the fact that it s pretty minty makes it all that much better :biggrin1:

All in all, today was not to bad after all.

You tell by the case its a Diplomat, did they describe it as a Aristocrat? ... (which has a different case and razor)

You tell by the case its a Diplomat

Relying on the case is a recipe for trouble as pieces are often mixed and matched. Much better to be able to recognize pieces separately so you know when you've got a matched set or not. In this case everything's good. The band on the handle above the TTO knob being knurled tells you that the razor is a Diplomat, and the case it's in is exactly the right one.

The most similar Aristocrat set would be the 1948-1951 version that had the same case layout, but without the fleur-de-lis motif on the outside and a different interior. Also notice that the band above the TTO knob is smooth ribbed rather than knurled like the rest of the handle.

Very nice score. Under $60 is a good price for a cased Diplomat in that shape.

Great shaver too. My President (silver toned version of Diplomat) is one of my favorites.

You make a very good point, i seen many buyers buy rare razors that were in mismatched/common cases. The mismatch razor in case can sometimes be a blessing in disguise.:thumbup1:

You did not even need the case to ID this one, it was pictured big as life:lol:........

I know right, I looked through all the pic's, I even remember looking at that one specifically and all the while thinking "ohh finally a nice aristocrat for the shelf", time to get some new glasses and a prescription to a focus enhancing drug :)

It happens to the best of us, most of these razors look alike and sometimes things get by us.

So...are the Arisocrat and Diplomat essentially the same razor other than the knurling detail?

I haven't done an exhaustive analysis of their head geometries or anything, but just from handling them and my experience shaving with them I'd say yes, they're the same other than the knurling difference.
