What's new

This is why I shouldn't spend so much time here.

So I've recently been hanging around the haberdashery and the barber shop quite a lot. I like the talk about clothing, shoes, pens, beer, whisk(e)y, watches, and things of that nature. Recently I've been seeing a lot of talk about watches, particularly mechanical and automatic ones.

Mind you I've got a very nice watch, a Bulova, which was given to me by my father as a Christmas gift after I destroyed my daily Fossil in a particularly nasty bicycle crash. It's comfortable, accurate, attractive, and very easy to use as it has a no-nonsense quartz movement.

So after seeing all of these mechanical watch threads I decide to pop over to everyone's favorite auction site (my first mistake). While I'm there I decide to sign in (mistake number two). At first I'm looking at the high end mechanicals; Rolexes, Omegas, and the like. Beautiful pieces, but well out of my price range for years to come. On a whim I decide to put in some filtering that's more in line with what I might be able to actually afford (mistake number 3).

Now I'm looking at some Seiko 5 models. There are plenty around $60-70, but I don't really need to spend that on a watch right now. I keep scrolling. I stumble upon some Russian watches and a few of them pique my interest. One in particular, a somewhat recent Vostok, jumps out at me. A very basic watch with roman numerals, a date window, black characters on white with a black leather band. I take a look at the price, $13 with $10 shipping. I think, "Why not?"

This morning, I wake up to find that I have won a watch.

Earlier this week I did a similar thing with a Hero 200A fountain pen. It was only $30 for a gold nib, how can you not get that?

Aaah ... the e-bay lowball ...

I often play that game, and have ended up with some surprisingly good deals (and some stinkers, I must admit--sometimes those low prices are no accident). In particular, I have ended up with some pretty cool razor lots, though the number of mismatched pieces, cracked handles, and bent teeth is pretty high too ...

I have the habit of bidding on items, then deciding I really don't want the item. I just sit there checking to see if someone outbids me. When they do I breathe a sigh of relief. Then I do it again. I just don't learn.
Currently my eyes are on a Parker 51 and a Cross Townsend FP to match my ballpoint. Oh and a Gillette slim. A Seiko 5 sounds like fun too.
When's payday again?

I did that a couple weeks ago after seeing some cufflinks. I put an early bid in (which I seldom do) and, when no one else bid I figured I would own them.

Next time I looked at them I realized they were ugly. Very ugly.

I am seldom drunk enough in the mornings to bear looking at cufflinks like that.

But, as it turned out, several others demonstrated not only poor taste to match mine, but more robust bank accounts.
