Third pin question

Well I'm going to try my first pin this weekend and was wondering when do you pin the third pin ? My guess would be after the pivot pin ? I have watched a few pinning videos on YouTube, but none of them pinned a third.

Thank you in advance of your comments and please link any videos that show pinning a third pin.

I always pin the wedge first then the pivot and last the third pin.

The reason this works best IMO is if you do the wedge and then the third pin it is really hard to put the inside washers on the pivot as the scales are pretty fixed.

Its far easier just to slide the barrel over the third pin rod.

Just my observation from repinning a few.

I'm curious, what makes you decide when to use a 3rd pin and when not to? Do you use it only with thin plastic or acrylic scales?

My experience making scales is only with wood scales. Thanks.

There are a few razors that the tang actually rests on the third pin, others it is just decorative.

You have to be careful with it or it would look odd. It needs to be in the middle of the scales (top-bottom) with enough clearance for the tail to flip all the way through, cant raise the tang enough to have it floating over the scales when closed.

I understand that it's for the tang to rest on but if the wedge is of the appropriate size the blade can't fall though the scales anyway and therefore why does the tang need to rest on a pin?

I can imagine that if the scales are thin enough (plastic) then perhaps holding the scales too tightly could end up touching the sides of the blade and a 3rd pin could prevent that.

I was just curious as to the logic of using one.
