Thinking of making a custom brush

So I am thinking about making a custom brush and buying the materials from the golden nib. My question is, that if I get the best quality badger hair from them and the handle, will be better, equal, or of lesser quality then say compared to any other badger brush around 100 to 150?

Tastes vary, but I find my TGN finest XH 22-mm fan holds up well against any other brush I have. At the moment that includes Shavemac D01, Simpson best, Rooney super, and Rooney finest.

It all depends on how you set the knot.

There is a little more to making a brush other than sticking two parts together with marine epoxy.

You need to mate the loft with the knot size and density. The loft depends on your primary function for the brush, face lathering or bowl lathering.

So....

What kind of brush do you want to end up with?

Bowl Lathering. In all honesty I really have no idea how to make a brush... just a random thought came in my head "hey why not make one" and I had to obey the voice

How deeply a knot is set in the handle can also make a difference, I believe, even with all else remaining equal, including hair, loft, knot size, shape, and density.

I did not like the TGN Best, found it to scratchy. Go with the Finest, it is, IMO comparable to any 100 brush out there.

+100 on the Finest XH (extra hair) knots. Go ahead and treat yourself. A knot like this and a handle like this and a little time and epoxy, and you'll have a superb brush that will last you a decade or more. I'd recommend setting to a 48mm loft (that's the amount sticking out the top of the handle). You'll have to measure to find out how deep to set it. It's fun and easy. Go for it - you won't be sorry!

Hi and welcome future brushmaker!!! I've done 2 from TGN so far. One was Super Silvertip + their handle, the other a Made Rite handle that I restored with a TGN 22mm ff xh. I read the wiki, I read what other members did and the next thing I knew was that I had really fine brushes that cost me the pleasure of making them. My third is in line and then probably a fourth...... It's a satisfying project, jump in, the water's fine!
