I restored two brushes well over a decade ago, close to when I joined the forum, and they turned out pretty nice. One was a 100T, black and white, and I used (I think) a TGN 22mm best badger. The other was a red/cream 150 and I used a TGN silvertip in that one.
The 100T has seen better days, beginning to lose a few hairs out of the center of the knot, not too bad yet, but I overused this brush, it was my daily driver for a long time. Plus my sister's dog chewed it up a bit, so the handle has, um, character.
Well, I ordered an Ever Ready 100T on eBay and lo and behold, it is UNUSED! Gorgeous shape, even the gold lettering is flawless.
Although I did this before, I only did the two brushes and it was so long ago, I don't really remember much about doing it. And I have enough badgers and boar brushes now, I think I'd like to put a good synthetic knot in this handle, but I don't know anything about the knots available, and products seem to change quite a bit. And that knot looks awfully small. I hear folks put 22mm knots in them, but that looks like it might be a 20mm original. I have not measured it.
I'm nothing if not patient, so I can do the work, and I like it to be perfect. What advice would you give for a good knot for this, including size? If I widen the opening, I think I'd be more comfortable doing it with sandpaper any fingers rather than with a Dremel, you can get in trouble with a dremel really quickly. Washer epoxied in the bottom, wine cork, washer epoxied to the top of the cork, for the base?
I really remember next to nothing aobut my first two restores. Was never interested enough to do more, but I'd like to make this one and could see myself getting into restoring them if it goes well.
Thanks!
Cheers,
