my senior year in college there was a dual taught english/political science class on harry potter and lord of the rings.

i didn't take it though. i took useful stuff like the history of modern germany.

There've been wacko "pop culture" courses for a long time.
There was a pop culture course at my alma mater in 1972. It devolved into a 3 month pub crawl once the professor decided that half the classes would be held where the "culture" could actually be experienced as well as discussed.

Needless to say there was a long waiting list to enroll for the second semester when the university administraters pulled the plug. The prof was last seen playing a sax in a jazz club.
