The William's enigma

Well, after all the back and forth about William soap, I went for it.

Previously I had checked it at the Walmart where I'd see it, wasn't sure about the scent and passed on it. Then the other day I found it at a pharmacy for 2$ and decided to give it a try.

The next day I was ready to take the jump and see what the fuss was about. I expected to have trouble with it as getting it to lather appears to be a big problem for many.

I did my usual, soaked my brush and the soap in/with hot water for about 30 seconds, poured most of the water out of the bowl but leaving a bit to ensure a proper mix. I did my usual 30 second (or so) swirl on the soap, and the lather appeared without any trouble.

I found that the scent was more pleasant that I had found it when dry/checking it at the store... I remember that at Walmart, it had a strong menthol type smell (why I had passed on it at the time), but found that this soap didn't have the same smell.. possibly a reformulated version?

So the shave went well, no problem with it drying too fast, the lather had body and while I tend to not over fluff my lather, it held itself quite well and passing my brush under the running water to grab a bit more water did the job of adding enough water to re-lather for the second pass and detailing.

Then the funny part happened... my wife walked in the bathroom and said that she absolutely loved the smell of my aftershave (which I still hadn't done), so she enjoyed the scent of Williams quite well.

Afterwards, my skin was as good as it is with my Proraso white (my usual choice). No irritation or anything.

So, my first experience with William's is that I quite enjoyed it, and definitely will be part of my rotation, and now I wonder why it gets the hate it does on here... for 2$, it's an unbelievable bargain.

I don't understand either why it gets so much hate. I absolutely love it and it is a top-5 soap soap for me for sure!

I have 2 pucks here that I picked up at Walmart for $1.88 about a month ago, I'll have to give it a go,

I agree: YMMV

Williams wasn't bad. About as good or maybe a little better than vdh deluxe. I don't mind the scent either, although it's not my favorite. The thing that keeps me from using it is that every other soap I've tried has been better. Mikes, mwf, cella, tabac, speick, mdc, strop shoppe, la shaving soaps, Palmolive stick. All better. By a lot. Maybe I'll try Williams again soon though. It's been a while...

If one is not a snob with a preconceived notion going in, Williams is an EXCELLENT product. Smells nice, lathers very well without 13 or so detailed steps, provides great cushion and slickness, and is very economically priced.

It will always be in my rotation.

Williams, VDH, Arko, the three Musketeers of the thrift tier, all have great bang for the buck.

Better soaps out there? You bet, and most of them cost more and have to be ordered. (Ok, Arko isn't widely in stores in the US, but I'll bet it is in much if the world.). So for the vast majority of people in the world using a "Chevrolet Nova" soap is no more demeaning than driving a Chevy Nova to work daily.

I have no heartburn with my working class status.

The Lather Maestro
I used it exclusively for 20 years, every day, with my carts. I did not know it was no good until I came here! :wink2:

I always had the puck in the bottom of a coffee cup and soaked it with the brush in the mug while I showered. Dump the water out, shook the brush, then lathered right on the puck in the mug. No 'loading' just made it right on the puck. I think it's fine.

This is going to sound like blasphemy, but I am in my day two of trying MWF and every time I lather it up it reminds me of Williams. Let me be clear. I am not saying they are the same-- MWF is better, but to be honest I don't see the $12 difference between these two. Maybe tomorrow I'll see it. Stone me if you wish. Now, about that Arko...

I tried it when I first started wet shaving, and didn't know that I didn't know how to make lather.

I didn't think much of it.

A day or two ago I saw it for sale for 1.15 a puck, and bought a couple of them.

I shaved with it today and it was a whole lot better.

Well, someone in charge of this circus must think Williams is all that, when they decided to use it as the background soap picture of this forum...
