What's new

The things I do in the name of razor restoration!

One of the guys sent me a Rhodium plated Aristocrat that was in pretty poor shape and asked if I could replate in Nickel. Those who have read previous posts will know that Rhodium is difficult and costly to plate, so bright nickel is a good alternative.

The only thing is that the worn Rhodium needs to be removed first. Without going into great detail, removal requires a piece of Lead to use as an anode/cathode.

Has anyone tried to find lead recently? I went to a local DIY store and they had Lead flashing in stock for roofs - but a roll cost £140!!!

So, when I got home, out came my ladder and up onto my own roof to cut a small piece of Lead from the flashing on the front of the house. Luckily no one called the police suspecting that I was a thief removing the Lead!

Anyway, it did the trick and the Aristo is ready for polishing and replating, so worth the climb

Hi Maher,

No, my last piece of Lead was used used on yours, this is another one, hence the roof climb. It was either this or breaking up my car bettery

that was my razor? you did an excellent job there, I will post pics soon

thanks

Love to see the pics. I really need to get that Toggle in the mail to start the journey across the pond to you.

Thanks guys,

I'd forgot about fishing weights and tyre weights as sources for lead.

I suppose if I lived near a civil war battlefield (English Civil War in my case) I may find a few musket balls, but then they'd be more valueable to sell on Ebay than melt down

Depending on the quantity needed. For plating I'm sure 1lb of lead will be more that enough and shipping would not be that high.

I'm curious about replating.
I have a few old razors which shave well but look a little tatty. I've also just won a "birth year" slim adjustable on ebay. It's not arrived yet (coming from across the pond) but I did wonder about "pimping" it.
How much do you charge for replating?

....oh and I don't think postage should be too much of a problem. Your business address is well within cycling distance of my home.

Hi Paul,

Indeed, we are neighbours! Our office is also in Boldon Colliery - so even closer?

Slims Fat Boys 3-piece and Super Speeds are all £10 to strip old nickel, polish the brass, touch in any missing copper on handles etc and replate in shiny bright nickel as per the original and finally polish and lube. I also repaint the numbers in on the Adjustables too.

Each razor takes around 2 hours to complete.

As I've mentioned before, I don't do plating to make a profit, I enjoy it and the small fee helps go towards buying the chemicals and nickel etc to plate my own razors.

Here are some examples, stripped of old Nickel and Replated:

They look lovely. I'll see what this slim looks like when it arrives. £10 seems very reasonable for the work you put in. The replated vintage razors on your website also look impressive.
