The smell of VDH

I've been using creams as long as I've been shaving and I decided to give soap a try. Rather than order something nice I just bought a puck of VDH at a walmart last week, just used it for the first time earlier. I dunno if it's just me, but wow did I think this stuff smelled awful. Am I going nuts, or is it horrible?

Hmmm. The scent is so mild, that, even if it didn't hit your G Spot, it's hard to think of mitigating reasons why you'd think it's horrible. The most likely reason is that you're nuts. Welcome to the asylum.

I use it on a daily basis, but I haven't really noticed anything "off" about it or really much of anything at all scent wise. I'm not known for my keen sense of smell though, so YMMV.

I really like the scent a lot...here is a little fact about the scent: all VDH shaving soaps are scented with the cologne Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene.

If anyone else out there likes the smell of VDH soap, try the cologne out.

I've never found the smell of VDH to be awful. But if you do, just cut it up into a microwave safe bowl. Put a couple of splashes of your favorite after shave in it. Then nuke it in the microwave for about 30 or so and voila' you've got a custom scented shave soap.

I thought the pure glycerin smelled nice but the other two had a wierd note to them that I can't place. It is not over powering and the thoughts on scenting your own are great. The off smell might be just me. For local finds don't forget the Williams.

+1. I really like the smell of VDH Deluxe soap. Nice. Much milder than the cologne. I like the cologne, too (after the drydown!) and wear it once in awhile during the colder months of the year.

I always considered VDH to have a distinctly mild scent. This just goes to show how largely perceptions can vary. As others have said, it takes added fragrance oils well.

I love the smell of VDH Deluxe, but the smell when new is much stronger than after it has been sitting in your mug or bowl for a while.

That's the truth. I bought one of those Burma Shave kits (soap, brush, mug) just for fun a few weeks ago. When I first used the soap the scent was way too strong and put me off. But after it sat wet for a day or two it settled down to a much gentler and almost pleasant scent.

My VDH soap has a scent that behaves in a similar manner.

I also just bought the Geo Trumper Shaving cream sampler and noticed that the scent was very subtle - almost not there.

I bought a puck of it last week at Walmart, threw it in a coffee mug and forgot all about it until last night. Soaked it and my brush while I showered, hit it with the tiniest drop of glycerine and went to town. Gave me a great shave and I enjoyed the smell.

About an hour later I'm laying in bed browsing B&B on my laptop, when I look over and see my girlfriend in the bathroom, her face burried in the mug with the VDH in it, taking deep breaths and ranting about how she liked it just becase of how "simple" it was compared to all my other soaps and creams (that she loves by the way, she's a big mama bears fan lol)

Now she wants to use my Penworks silvertip and Mama Bears on her legs lol. Who knew a 23 year old girl would be into DE shaving gear? I think she has a slight case of SSAD.

So yeah, long story short, I like it!

Did you just take the puck out of the plastic right before using it?

The scent on VDH, as stated earlier, is VERY similar to Grey Flannel, just not as strong; it is a very light smell. I love the smell of VDH, but smelled it while it was still in the plastic one time and it was not good at all. Give it another try tomorrow after it has sat out in a bowl or something.

I concur with the strong at first, lighter later statement. It wasn't a bad scent at first, but not the type of scent I would wear around all day (my opinion only). After having it for a week or two, it smelled more like a standard soap, and after lathering, the smell was barely there at all.

I was willing to overlook the scent even when strong, becasue the soap performed so well for the money!

A little off topic, but with that burma shave kit make sure you don't forget to clean that brush really good and soak in vinegar if you plan to use it. I wanted the full effect so I used the brush, soap, and mug the first time I tried it out. I remembered the soap not being too bad dry, then I used the brush on it and man it wreaked. Later on I realized that it was the brush; not the soap.
