The Right Shaving Cream..??

sup fellas,
Newbie to the world of DE shaving, i got sick of the disposable cartridge blades and decided to try the old fashion DE razors. Wow what a difference!!!! the only thing now is that I am confused with all the different types shaving creams out their. Ive been using Anthony shaving cream for over a year and I like it a lot, but that's when I used disposable cartridge blades. So I stopped at the AOS and got few samples of their of the unscented shaving cream and, after shave wow I like it a lot, been using it for about 2 weeks. But whats the deal with the three T's what makes them so good..? Are they better than AOS products??
thanks

Welcome to SCAD! The variety seems unending, but you will find your own favorites. You might check the reviews section on this site.

Well i have been searching the reviews, but they really don't say why their the best, so could anybody tell me if Trumper's and T&H are better than AOS products..?

Well, I'm in the same situation as you :001_smile

Like most things, there is no 'best'. It's really a matter of trying them out to see what you like and what you don't - and it all adds to the fun, which is the whole point, really.

If you start with the most popular and work your way from there, you won't go far wrong.

Good luck!

Check the BST and you will see deals on a lot of items. Since they're usually much less than retail, you can try some of the more pricey items.

Along the way, pick up some basics:

Crema da Barba
Mussgo
Tabac

Ditto on this. Trying them out to find out what works for you and what you like is part of the fun/journey. That said, there are a few that you should probably try. These include Proraso, Musgo Real, and Nancy Boy; these are all very different creams, but top performers in their own right. Many people love Speick and TOBS avocado...also different. The 3T's are all good, but most folks seem to consider them a little over-rated. Your mileage may vary.

OK thanks for the info, but one more question, are the tree T's worth buying, because the only way i can get them is on the net. So it's not like i can see them in the store, or dose anybody now where they sell it in the Bay area (San Francisco)

I have no experience with the three T's, but I do have AOS lavender. A lot of people get great results with AOS cream and think it's top of the line, but I personally get MUCH better results with Proraso (C.O. Bigelow). For a noob it's really forgiving, whether you make it dry or wet it performs great. With AOS, on the other hand, I have to be careful but no matter how good of a lather I get it doesn't perform nearly as well as Proraso. Of course, this is just my experience, lots of people love AOS. But I highly recommend you get Proraso, and it's a lot cheaper than the three T's, so you really can't go wrong.

My suggestion.....

Get a tube of Bigelow (re-labled Proraso) at Bath and Body Works.

and RUN to Nancy Boy and get a tub of their Shaving Cream. It is amazing.

And the two T's I've tried (Trumper and Truefitt and Hill) have been amazing and worth the hype.

The answer I'm about to give is the most important one you'll ever get on this forum: it depends.

The reason is twofold. For one thing, human skin and hairs are not created equal, so the formula which workes marvellously with one shaver may work noticably less with another. There is no way to tell in advance, you just have to find it out the hard way. This is true for any product, ranging from cheap Arko to very expensive Acqua di Parma. (They differ by about a factor 50 in price per unit weight.) Second is that one T is beginning to be a little more expensive, and one T is expensive. The scents are usually a step above synthetical freshness found in cheaper products, but in terms of what actually does the shaving there is very little difference. However, people have a strong tendency to consider them a sort of 'guilty pleasure': because they're expensive they must be good, and because they're good they must be expensive.

To summarise: they might have a very specific mixture of saponified oils which happens to be your skin's sweet spot, and then they are better than AoS; but at the same time it is not because of the price that they are at that sweet spot. Hence my answer: it depends. Enjoy your voyage of discovery.

You can buy samplers of T&H creams and Trumper's creams at very reasonable prices; then you can see for yourself how you like them.

So which ones are better than AOS..?? and out of Trumpers and T&H which one is better, for I can only get samples of T&H, that is when I get around to ordering them.

It's not easy to call one cream better than another. The answer will be different for each individual person. Personal preference is a big part of deciding which cream is best for you. I would recommend getting sample packs of the 3 T's. Trumper's and T&H both offer samplers of their creams on their websites, and www.shavingessentials.biz has a Taylor's sampler.

What would be better than the AOS cream...and why, i know you say that ever cream is different but adleast point me in the right direction.

I have TOBS St. James and Eton Hill and both are very good creams. So is Trufitt & Hill's Grafton.

They are A+ in everything from scent to slickness.

Since you've already tried AOS, I suggest AOS next. Only you can decide which one you like better!

Welcome to B&B.

I can't use AOS cream because something in even the unscented version bothers my skin.

If you have money to burn, I'd recommend the Gentlemen's Refinery Unscented shave cream. I think they have a sample pack you can buy of all their products. Their unscented cream is fantastic, and one of the best on the market. It's very slick, wet, and loaded with more glycerin than any other cream I've tried. Unfortunately, that means you end up using more of it for each shave compared to the English or Euro creams. Thus, it's not the best value out there.

I'm a big fan of Taylor's Avocado like a lot of people on this board. It's very moisturizing and slick stuff. Very dense too, so a tub lasts a long time. Scent is weird but I like it.

Body Shop also makes a very good cream that will stand up to just about anything on the market. Very moisturizing and protective and slick. I've not tried the new version but most of the ingredients are the same as the old one except the scents is different and it has maca root extract now.

Trumpers didn't impress me much. Performance is fine but the scents bothered my skin. I do like their Rose Soap, which is a bit milder than the cream version in scent.

I wouldn't discount less expensive creams either. Honestly I would just read through the reviews on this site and just look into whatever sounds interesting to you. Although it's a matter of preference, a lot of cheaper euro drugstore type creams that come in the metal and plastic tubes work just as well as the more expensive products out there.

No. You left out a crucial part of my contribution: they might have a very specific mixture of saponified oils which happens to be your skin's sweet spot, and then they are better.... There is no absoluteness to it. I cannot tell you which ones are 'better' because I am not you. That's how it works.

Most creams of the 3 Ts follow the same basic recipe, so if you try one of one brand you've nearly tried them all of that brand, at least in shaving quality.

Taylor: Avocado, Hypoallergenic, any random other
Trumper: all the same to my knowledge
T&H: Ultimate Comfort, any random other.
