The One Pass Shave is King! :

Well a little background about me I guess. I am a swede, dirty blonde haired guy with that sensitive skin. Going on 40, my beard seems to be tougher then say it was 10 years ago. Anyway, having that really sensitive skin has always been an issue when it came to shaving. (so much that for many years I went for the scruffy look, it looked good though so I kept it). Recently, I just really focused more so on my method, forget the blades for a second, forget which razor you have or which cream or soap you use. None of that is any good without a good method. So, I recently decided to stick to one pass shaves, I even went back to using T&H shave oil under the lather. I have to say the one pass shave is pretty damn good. After a few days of sticking to the one pass shave (with the grain) and shaving every morning, any shave irritation has gone away and I have to say, I am sticking to the one pass shave. Yesterday I went back and did some buffing on the chin, very lightly and very minimal and today, it didn't even require any touch ups. Just the one pass. I highly recommend this for any of you that have sensitive skin as well. Give it a couple of days as well as any irritation may take a couple of days to calm down and go away. Now, I just can't wait to the Feather AS-D2 arrives early next week and see how that works with the one pass method.

I've been largely using the one pass shave since I started using my CJB. Great shave in one pass with zero irritation. I do miss the opportunity to relather and extend the shave so I'm sure I'll go back to a two pass with some of my milder razors at some point.

Good point on the technique, sometimes when playing with all the new toys we forget the basics.

I went from three passes to one pass for almost a year to get my technique under control. Once I felt confident, I went back to two passes and then three. Then back to two; on account of with the razor I was using, I could ATG after one pass of WTG. With my latest razor, I cannot do that, which is a good thing. So I'm up to three again.

My beard is way too heavy and the Marine Corps is far too obsessed with us being clean shaven, for me to get by with a 1-pass shave.

Im shooting for the one pass. I use straights and used to do the wtg xtg xtg and atg. now i do xtg and atg. Im 90-95% bbs. the extra passes didnt make the shave smoother. i wanna go one pass atg, maybe a little more on the chin and im hoping i can get there by summer. no rush. i just want to see if i can do it.

I can never get close enough in the area just above and under the cheek bone with one pass. That area always gets an XTG pass.
Regards,
Renato

According to my Father back in the old day 40's, 50's or so, one pass and touch ups was a normal shave. He says he may have done a sort of second pass if he was headed out to a special event but that was about it. When I told him guys do 3 or even 4 passes, he commented "why would you do that, shaving that much would cause irritation". Moral of the story, less is probably better even in shaving. As always YMMV!

I pretty much shave with one pass every day, a little buffing, and done. If I REALLY need to have a BBS, then I will 2-3 pass it. BlackBear, when I first started shaving with Bic disposables and Barbasol 25yrs ago, I only shaved one pass ATG. Never could figure out why I stayed so irritated!

I understand your father's point, the "issue" here is that most of us want to be BBS. If I did a one pass shave I'd be at minimum SAS, probably DFS most days. I'm not satisfied with that though, I want as close to BBS as I can. Thankfully my sensitive skin can take what I'm doing (two passes with a straight with possible atg with a DE, or three with a DE) to achieve that. If I had to shave and go I'd just do a single WTG pass but most of the time I shave at night and have as mucht time as I want...provided I don't want to sleep as much if I take longer. :)

Cheers,

M.

I usually go 2 passes with either a shavette or Gillette Slim, but if I shaved more often, 1 pass would definitely be workable!

2 passes with a straight.
The second pass is more of a touch-up. Just to make sure that I got it all, nice and even.
I find that the second pass, cross-grain, gives me a super close shave too, that I wouldn't be able to get with only the one pass.
My skin is also rather sensitive, but the creams take care of it pretty good. :)

I used to get ingrown hairs like crazy with cartridge shavers, but that problem has gone away using a 1 pass shave, wtg (EJ DE89). I have fairly light hair, so even though I can feel stubble if I rub against the grain, I still look clean shaven. I've done 3 passes before, and I even go for the occasional 2 pass xtg when I want to get closer, but my face usually feels more comfortable with 1 pass.

That's nice that the one pass works for you, and I've found that I can get a presentable shave doing one pass. However my one pass usually consists of a combo of WTG and XTG, but it does leave me with a very nice shave. In fact I used this combo for my shave today. However most times I prefer my standard 2 pass, which consists of the above listed first pass, followed by the second, which consists of ATG and again XTG. That what works best for me, but of course one has to find their own personal best way. Nice that what you've described works so well for you.

I have a very thick, full, coarse beard. I do one xtg pass every morning with excellent results and zero irritation, burn, nicks, or blemishes. A very, very clean, very presentable, 98% bbs shave every time. If I'm going out for the night I'll do two passes.

My point and OP's point: it's not the # of passes, it the technique. I got bashed on W_E for preaching this, glad to see some sensible shavers on B&B.
