The Mysterious German Bakelite Slant....

On occasion, I'll surf the 'bay from other countries for shaving goodies. Once in a while I find something interesting. I found this bakelite slant via ebay Italy. There was no real information on it and I'm not sure if these guys are NOS or current production. The only info I got on these was through this link: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...lite-Slant-Bar-Razor-(Old-Merkur-Production-)
I've seen them float around ebay for about $30 with a case. Whatever it's source, I am pleasantly surprised with this little toy slant. When I got it I had the similar reaction to when I got the Wee for the first time, "Is this thing serious?"
Well, I loaded up a Med and just went at it. Each pass felt like shaving with a bakelite Tech, almost benign but I knew it was working. I went for 4 passes plus a final polishing at the end. In the back of mind I knew I was working towards some major irritation but no, no irritation and glassy BBS finish.
Due to it's lightness, it's hard to apply pressure, you'd really have to try hard to do this. Also, because of the fat head and defined safety bar, it's a breeze finding the correct angle. The lightness of the razor is actually it's best characteristic. My only complaint is the round top cap that makes it cumbersome to shave beneath the nose.
Overall, it was a treat using this razor but have I no idea where it comes from...

It's a Fasan I think. I was just looking at an ebay listing of the same razor with a box. They came in all different colors, even clear.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly the same as mine, which was also discussed a bit in this other thread.

And then someone told me this: "The Head shows the unique Globusmann/Globusmen Design, so i guess that its such a razor. Its was not unusual that even high rated Trademarks and Producers sold there Razors without any markings, for Example, that actual Merkur 45 Bakelite has also no Markings of Merkur, but the same Handle like the italian Globusmann."

I don't think this one looks like a Fasan at all, though they did make bakelite slants too. I have a Fasan, and both that and this white one give great shaves. If you don't have that open comb Fasan one, you should try to find one if you like this white one; it's one of my favorites. I love slants in general. Jake posted this really interesting Gillette-printed instruction thing from when the New came out, and it showed that the "right way to shave" is to use a stroke that slants instead of being perpendicular to the blade edge. I really enjoy Bakelite too. People talk about how 'feedback' is satisfying, when you almost seem to hear every whisker getting whacked off, and I find with a Bakelite, you also FEEL the feedback.

:thumbup1: Although I do like the heft of a regular Hoffritz/Cole etc slant. This would be a two/three day hair growth slicer. Love it.

You're right! You do feel the feedback, it's pretty neat. I'm with the theory that it's a Globusmann. Maybe the company also makes the Merkur bakelite. Bakelite is a hassle to produce and I don't think that Merkur would have a set up just for bakelite. Who knows.

I'm curious, why do you think this is bakelite? The picture of the head puts me in mind of nylon - are all the parts the same material or the head made of something different?

The listing for it indicated it as bakelite. All of the parts seem to be made of the same material. I can scrape a tiny sliver off from under the head and burn it and see if it smells like formaldehyde, one of the hallmarks of bakelite.

Hello, this razor is very popular in Italian Community and german forum.
Design is similar to modern Merkur 45.
Probably belongs to the 70's german production.
