What's new

The French chef

Food channel is rerunning Julia Child's The French Chef series.

I have not seen them in decades.

The production values are so primitive, clanking cutlery and pots, random wandering around looking for tools. Single camera shots ect.

The lady can cook though.:thumbup1:

This where many people learned that they could cook without using processed foods. The first and the best.

A great series, a cooking show from before they were cool! Thanks for mentioning it Jim, if nothing else, I'll DVR it.

The Galloping Gourmet (Graham Kerr) proved otherwise in the 60's.

It came out later on the Julia Child was drinking during at least some of her shows. I remember one where it became obvious that she was rather looped during the filming. But she was a great influence for home cooks.

Many years ago when I wanted to start to learn to cook I started by buying Julia's Mastering the Art of French Cooking books. I went through the books and then started to interpret and practice. They are invaluable and I still use them today. Her recipe for Chocolate Mousse always gets raves from our guests. My wife always asks for her Supremes in aromatic vegetables and cream sauce for her chosen birthday meal and it was Julia's spinach sauteed in beef broth that got my darling bride to eat spinach and like it (her mother was astounded!).

Some years later I was able to buy a limited VCR collection of Julia's shows covering specific topics etc. It afforded me the opportunity to see how my interpretations of her recipes faired against her demonstration. Watching those shows was a great learning experience.

She is a giant on the culinary stage and I am grateful to her for allowing me to enjoy more fully my love of cooking and good food.

I remember watching Julia Child's show on PBS when I was a kid and how she made cooking look fun and easy. I loved it when something would go wrong with one of Julia's recipes and she would show you how to fix it on the fly. You don't see that on modern cooking shows and that's too bad, because things don't always go smoothly in the kitchen.
