The clean up?

I finally got all my equipment.

I have a few questions regarding clean up.

I plan on using soap in a cup to build lather. How do I cleanup when done? Do I permanently leave the soap in the cup? What do I do with the excess lather still in cup?

Do I dry my badger brush or let it air dry?

Is it fine to leave the blade in the safety razor?

Any risk of rust?

Any other cleanup tips?

Any tips on maintenance?

You can leave the soap in the cup, you could leave the lather to dry and get the brush in there the following day.

I hold my brush under a running tap until the water runs clear, squeeze out the water, buff the brush against a dry towel in the same manner of face lathering, give it a shake and put it in a holder that hangs the brush upside down.

Yes, leave the blade in the razor

Not if you're using daily or every other day

Also hold the razor head under a running tap, shake off excess water and loosen the head of the razor (remember to tighten before shaving! before leaving it to stand.

I only shave 1-2 times a week.

Also, is it really necessary to get a holder for the brush?

I was going to buy a toothbrush holder for the safety razor, doubt it would hold the brush.

re the mug:
i wouldnt build lather right on top of the soap, either load up in the mug and build in a bowl, or load in the mug and build on your face. Any excess lather in the mug just leave there, it will dry out and you can use it again next time.

re brush drying:
squeeze out all the water from the knot after rinsing it out, shake out any excess water and rub the tips in a kinda stropping motion on a towel to dry it out. then just let it sit and dry

re the blade:
leave it in there, rust wont be an issue

tips and maintenance:
have fun!

agree with all the above only thing I would add is that I have a small jar of rubbing alcohol on my counter. Before and after every shave I dip the razor in it. I don't think it adds to the life of the blade or anything just displaces the water and cleans off the soap scum.

Aftershave cleanup routine:

  • While sink is draining, Rinse face.
  • Rinse brush. Shake, and set aside to dry.
  • Rinse razor. Set down so that the head is upright (a cup works for this).
  • Rinse mug or bowl if used to build lather.
  • Cover soap. I never rinse the soap.
  • Final wipe of the counter.
I'm particular about razor storage with a blade loaded because I have learned that at least most stainless steel razor blades can rust if left wet. Keeping the head up prevent the water from pooling under it, which would then be in contact with the blade. I never remove the blade from the razor to dry it. Not worth the effort.

I'm probably a bit anal but here is my clean up:

-Rinse face with warm then as cold water as the tap will run, pat mostly dry then air dry the rest while.....
-Rinsing out my lather mug and brush. I also after a thorough rinsing mix water in the mug with my brush as if I were building lather.
-Rinse razor and blade (yes I take them apart)
-Dry mug razor and blade thoroughly (buff the metal on the razor with a towel to remove any soap residue)
-Put it all away apply ASB and call it done

My routine is pretty much the same as everyones. Rinse and shake out brush. Hang brush. Rinse razor, shake dry. I made a brush stand out of a coat hanger. It works great and costs nothing.

.........and loosen the head of the razor (remember to tighten before shaving! before leaving it to stand.
Hey boys, What is the purpose of this? Never done that.

+1 to Mdunn's suggestion to NOT build lather on the soap, you'll waste a lot of product that way. Load the brush up, then move either to another mug or your face to create the lather (both of which should be rinsed off after use!)
