The best oil for an adjustable

Hi Folks-

I wanted to share with you an oil to lubricate your adjustable razors with that is non-toxic and synthetic. I play trumpet and as you might know, or not, one must oil the valves everyday. The constant motion of the valves combined with saliva is a really harsh environment to keep well oiled. I use a product called "Ultra Pure" valve oil. It is colorless, odorless and non-toxic. No petroleum in it. I use it on my Gillette slim adjustables about once a month to keep things smooth.

I buy my supply from Dillons Music in New Jersey, but it is widely available from music store that sell to brass players.

A 2 ounce bottle should last several lifetimes! Use very little as it is very thin oil and a couple drops goes a long way.

Most important!!! - make sure the razor you are lubrication is perfectly dry inside and out otherwise the oil will not adhere to the surfaces you are trying to lube.

Best,

Thanks for the tip. Was wondering how water soluble the oil is. I wash my razor every time I use it.

One of the beauties of this lubricant is that is is NOT very water soluble. It sticks like crazy to those trumpet valves. If the valves dry out in any one spot they start to stick which is death to a trumpet player.

So rinse and wash away. When you notice the razor getting a bit sticky add a drop of oil. For me it has been about once a month but I just rinse it off real well after each use.

thanks for the tip, i was just checking new posts before searching for this info :) ive a tto that sounds like a dog whistle when i open it, my dog agrees with that too :)

Yep, Yep.

I've used valve oil too, when I have it handy. My Getzen valves are nickel, so I figure it should work just fine on my nickel razors.

Haven't tried it on anything else.

I like this idea a lot. I have some old valve oil in my closet (from when my elder son briefly took up the trumpet, before he decided on guitar). I am going to try it next time one of my TTO's feels a little stiff.

Thanks!

Just ordered some from these folks: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...&loc=add&warr_id=decline&quantity=1&x=36&y=18

Shipping was more than the product but no tax and I don't have to drive around the Bay area looking for it. Our largest music/instument store didn't carry. If anyone wants to try send me a (little) container and I'll send you some. This amount should last me about 100 years.

I would love to try some on a Toggle that is stuck - it will only adjust from 3 to 9. Please PM me your address and I will send you a little container.

Thanks for the tip. You can also use Rem-oil which is made for firearms. It can be found at any store that carries hunting stuff. I will watch for a music shop and try out the valve oil.

The beauty of this particular valve oil is that it is non-toxic. Many other trumpet valve oils contain petroleum distillates so shop carefully. I don't think petroleum distillates are good for the skin!

The "trick" in using the Ultra-Pure valve oil is to make sure the surfaces are completely dry before application. I have several slims and I will let the one that needs a little lube dry out for a few days before I apply a drop to the mechanism. Works like a charm and is pretty long lasting.

Hey, another trumpet player!! What about "blue juice" (or at least thats what we call it), the blue valve oil? I've got plenty of that but havent thought of using it on my razors. I use a couple drops of baby oil to keep my adjustables well oiled.

i had mentioned this as a possible product quite awhile back and somebody posted "not bad if you don't mind your razor smelling like valve oil"

glad to know somebody has tried it

now if i can find my bottle...

Blue Juice and Al Cass both contain petroleum distilates. Definetaly a no-no in my book. I just don't want that stuff near my skin. It's one reason I turned to the synthetics. I used to sit next to a guy in a trumpet section who was allergic to the petroleum distilates.

I just used Super Oil (Trophy Music) on my British #22 TTO because the mechanism felt just a little rough in spots. It worked like a charm -- highly recommended. The consistency is very thin, and a little goes a long way.

BTW -- It sates clearly on the label that it does contain petroleum distillates.

Received my ultra pure the other day. Dissembled the Futur and cleaned then oiled. Man what a difference. I will gladly send samples of this oil to you if you want to try. Send PM.
