What's new

Thanks Uncle!

Just scored a 1964 J-3 Slim Adjustable from my Uncle. He didn't take care of it all. Tons of gunk. The adjuster isn't working. The band clicks at each number but the 4 plates aren't moving at all. I've got it boiling in water right now. Hopefully this little buddy comes back to life.

Well, boiling brought back life to the TTO and that works smoothly now and locks tight.

It also brought back the shiny silver luster. Went from being one nasty razor to one pretty piece.

Unfortunately, the adjuster isn't working. The adjuster ring turns and clicks at each number but the 4 risers in the head don't move. And yes, I do have the silo doors open. Instead, the adjuster ring itself moves up with each click towards 9 and moves down with each click towards 1. Any ideas?

are you trying to see if it's adjusting while the doors are open? it's very difficult for me to tell on mine, so here's my method:
adjust with doors open down to 1
close doors, note gap
adjust to 9 with doors open
close doors, note gap

see if that shows you anything.

I could have swore I replied to this earlier and now it's gone?

Anyway, yes, I did it your method as well. The adjuster ring with the numbers on it that you turn, clicks at each number and it moves up with each click up a number, and it moves down with each click down a number, but it's not raising or lowering the 4 risers inside the head.

With doors open, if everything is working correctly, the adjuster plate should rise when the adjustment collar is turned to a higher number, and fall freely (with gravity helping) when the collar is turned to a lower number. Slight sticking will require a blade to be tightened down by the doors in order to seat the plate.

Usually, when I have found a gunked and sticky adjustable, the collar will "free up" before the adjuster plate does. Give it another hot water soak with lots of dish soap, followed by a good dose of Scrubbing Bubbles. WD-40 can also help dissolve the gunk and loosen the plate.

The last frozen one that I had took two days of soaking and spraying to get it loosened up . . . but the outcome was worth it!!

Thanks! I'm going to give it another soak in boiling water shortly and then another good soak in Lysol 4 in 1 cleaner. I don't have scrubbing bubbles but I guess I'll try and find some if this second go-round doesn't work.

Well, it's getting there. After the second soak in boiling water, the risers now rise with the turn of the adjuster ring but they won't come back down with the turn of the adjuster ring. Back in for more boiling...

*ahem* Excuse me, Jody, but there's one small detail you seem to be missing.

Sorry! lol Like I said previously, I couldn't get 'before' shots as my batteries were dead. But this is what I do have.. And as of this last soak in boiling water, making it the 3rd time in 2 days, this razor is now working wonderfully! Adjuster is working, TTO is working.. now if I can just figure out how to get black paint back in the numbers, I'd have a beaut. Well compared to how it was before. You've all seen how dirty razors look.. film layers upon film layers of soap, greenish gunk in the corners and on handles.. Even after the 3rd boil soak, there were bits and pieces of god-knows-what floating in the water. She was dark and ugly, now she's shiny for the most part and clean! And she's in line for a shave, right after I use my new and newly cleaned GEM push-button SE!

There are no nice old adjustables, dirty or otherwise, coming to me from my relatives.

Therefore, as Eric Cartman would say: "I hate you, Kenny."

Sweet razor, though. ;)

It does have some heavy water staining on the doors and haven't figured out how to get rid of that, if it's even possible. What's a good polish that won't damage?

I've used Maas, but it took more than a few trips to get some. Every place I went to didn't have any in stock, and I kept getting told "No Maas".
