Few months ago, I decided to try shaving with DE razor, mainly because I'm living on a very tight budget, so any place where I could save a few bucks was worth considering. Being in mid-thirties and unemployed for 8 months (victim to cutbacks) was definitely not in my long-term plans. So I went to the supermarket and bought a cheap shaving brush (1) noname chinese DE razor in a blister pack (3) pack of blades (50¢) and tube of shaving cream (80¢), well I said I was on a budget. I named my first shave Death by a thousand cuts. I only shaved with cartridge razors before so, naturally, I did everything wrong. On the bright side (in a macabre sort of way), the look in my SHMBOs eyes when she saw me was priceless.
In a relatively short period of time, I got better with DE razor (technique, no pressure rule, WTG, XTG ) so now I can achieve a decent shave (bloodless one) and i am definitely not going back to overpriced cartridges.
And for the first time in my life I started to actually enjoy shaving, the ritual of it, the required focus... you know "Me" time.
Anyway, I want to thank you all for many sage advice you posted on this forum, It helped me a lot. The reason I survived those first steps on whet shaving learning curve was because of you, i learned all i know about proper shaving on this sacred pages.
This is a great place to visit and awesome community to be a part of.
Thinking ahead (I'm getting into the holiday spirit), I made a list of things I wish to try/acquire/own
1. A durable quality razor
2. A better/softer brush (Mine is very harsh and is losing more hair then me, and I got a bald spot!)
3. A year supply of sharper high-quality razors (Feather, persona ?...)
4. Bowl of Proraso soap or TOBS Sandalwood, Mitchell's Wool Fat?
5. Alum block /HQ mild Aftershave balm (Aftershave Im using now was patented by holy inquisition)
Things being what they are, I probably will not get most of the things on my list any time soon, but as my grandfather used to say, You make do with what you have. These days I certainly feel guilty buying things for myself (that are not absolutely necessary). Do not get me wrong, Im not complaining, I have so many things to be thankful for, my family, health, good friends and enough positive energy to make this months holidays a time of joy.
Sorry for the very long post, just felt like sharing.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!
