Taylor of Old Bond Street No. 74 Original and Mr Taylor

I have both of these aftershaves and love them. The No. 74 especially. It's just so unusual and distinct. I'm planning to get both colognes to compliment the aftershaves.

Anyone else a fan? I know Mr Taylor has some followers around here, but the 74 is more divisive. In the reviews section there is one extremely negative review and some very positive ones.

I think mine is the extremely negative one. I like floral scents but the less sweet ones (like rose and lavendar). There definitely are some fans and YMMV.

If you don't like sweet and VERY floral you might not like it. I suggest you sample it before buying, unless you're pretty sure you'd like it.

The aftershave is one of my faves. If the cologne is anything like it, I think I'll be in for a treat.

I do understand why you don't like it, though. Plus, I tend to like weird things--witness the Lilac Vegetarian status.

Scents are funny that way. I was surprised anyone liked No. 74, and I can't understand how anyone wouldn't like something like Douro or a good lavendar scent, but some don't.

FYI: I also don't like Castille. To me there's a similarity of what turns me off about these. I find them both sweet and cloying. I also like (but don't love) Endymion which for me is a bit too sweet. I do, however, very much like C&S #88, which is obviously very floral, but not sweet).
In food also, I like bitter more than sweet (love good beer, coffe without sugar and very dark chocolate). Not sure if this is all related, but I think it might be.

I actually don't like Pen's scents really. I wanted to, but didn't (except for English Fern).

With foods, I'm also more of a savory/spicy/salty guy. I don't care for sweet too often, with the exception of Creme Brulee, a souffle, or tiramisu. Coffee for me is best black.

I do have a soft spot for florals though--I like most of them. I think what I like best of No. 74 is that it reminds me of an exotic bouquet, something that is anachronistic and yet has a place in the modern world

I have No. 74 aftershave, and I think it smells great. Though, I have it on reserve for lazy days. I think it is a bit too floral for everyday use. The bottle and emerald green color are beautiful.

Gentlemen,

Taylor of Old Bond Street's No. 74 Victoria Lime has been in my aftershave stash for years. It will stay there for years to come.

The fragrance blends citrus with other delightful notes. The overall fragrance is light and pleasing. Comforting. Best of all, my lovely wife loves it — and that's says it all to me.

Good stuff No. 74.

Regards,

Obelit

Just to clarify: No. 74 original and No. 74 Victoria Lime are not the same. This thread does not refer to the Lime which I rather like.

Yeah, it's kind of funny that the green one is not the lime. But I love the color.

I never tried the Lime--it's on the List

I too find this odd. When I first got into traditional wet shaving I was sure I was looking at the wrong pictures or someone had linked them incorrectly. A quick glance at Taylor of Old Bond Street's web site set me aright. Since these are the old Royal Yacht scents I suspect the Original #74 was made first and was given the vivid green colour. What to do when the Victorian lime came along? Make it yellow like a lemon! Actually, it is not really bright yellow as we think of it. It looks that way in most online photos but the contents of my bottle of a/s has something of a gold cast to it. Whatever it is I love it. And I am not too sure I won't try the Original #74 soon. Would someone out there know who sells decants?

Regards, Todd

Dag nabbit; I just noticed that my order shipped but that the No. 74 is backordered. I have to wait several weeks now.

I wonder if this scent is more popular than we realize, or if it's just a case of scarce supply

I like Mr. Taylor's cream and aftershave but haven't tried the cologne. I heard that West Coast Shaving is going to post Mr. Taylor's cologne for sale very soon. Im on the list the second they post it up.

Cool--I hope they add No 74 cologne too--they have the aftershave at a steal ($28--although last I checked it was sold out)

I have a sample of Mr. Taylor and love it. I can't get back on the web site from which I got it though. Does anyone know a good place to get samples of TOBS scents?
