Talisker Storm Scotch Whisky

$talisker_storm_scotch_whisky_1.jpg

A single malt made near the sea on the Isle of Skye. Has a smooth, but complex aroma with just the right balance of sweet and smoky, made by blending casks from different ages. Warms the mouth with honey notes and a hint of peat.

Tried a free sample at the liquor store...

Didn't make me want to buy a bottle. It tasted... like it needed to stay in the oak a lot longer. IMHO. YMMV, and all that.

Talisker is my favorite distillery, I love the 18 year old expression. Their Distillers Edition needs to spend a wee bit more time in the casks though. Not had the chance to try the Storm, is it in wide distribution?

The Storm was just released in the US last week. I had the opportunity to taste it a couple of weeks ago from a Diageo rep. I think its good stuff. It tastes like what you would expect from Talisker. The MSRP is actually modestly above the 10 year. I personally think I prefer the 10 year, but its something I've been drinking for years so its more of a "classic" to me.

My opinion is that the briny notes have shifted from the finish to farther forward towards the palette compared to the 10 year old. That to me was the most distinguishable difference between the 2.

Dave, its great stuff, and definitely worth trying. I know the CostCo by me just got a bunch of the stuff in at a very good price, $60 some odd, which is less than I can regularly get the 10yr locally. So at that price I would have no qualms over picking it up.

Whoa, good tip! I'll have to check out my local Costco, usually they have some decent stuff there (ex. Lag 16)

I'm with you all the way. Just opened my bottle of Distiller's Edition tonight and had my first taste. Lots of interesting flavors peeking in and out, but somewhat lacking in depth. Still, a nice dram, and I will happily work my way through it, though I'll probably replace it with a bottle of the 10 y.o. I have a bottle of the 18 y.o. on the way. I had a sip a year and a half ago, and it was love at first sight, but couldn't find it after months of looking and finally gave up. Now it appears to be widely available once again.

I can't say I'm very curious about the Storm based on what I've read here. I suspect a gimmick, but of course I could be wrong. I liked JW Green Label well enough.

I have a bottle (as yet unopened) which was received as a gift. I will certainly write a review when I find the time to tear the top off the Storm.

SWMBO came home from abroad with a bottle of Talisker Dark Storm.
Aged in charred casks for extra smoke flavour.

Be prepared, be very prepared to have your socks blown off by the amount of smoke. Definitely not a glugging whisky. Might be an acquired taste, but I'll do my darndest to acquire it.

Hmm ... it's been ages since I've had some Tally. It's been mostly French scotch for me of late (La Froig and Glenlivet 15 ... French Oak) but now I have a hankerin' to open a bottle of the Tally again.

Wee bump.

We had a nice tasting session around the fire pit the other day.
Nothing too special - some Dalwhinnie, Jameson Black Barrel, Talisker Dark Storm and JW Travelers.

Maybe it was the crispness of the air and the smoke drom the fire, but the Dark Storm won over quite a few taste buds.

My bloody Dalwhinnie disappeared too, but quietly :)
