Switching from large to small brush. No clue how to make lather.

I recently got a Simpson S1 badger brush. I was shocked at how tiny it is. The brush is less than half the size of my old VDH badger brush. I'm at a loss of how to create lather from soap with this. Is there any special technique?

Edit: From my measurements the S1 has a loft of around 40mm while the VDH has one of around 60mm. The average loft I've read is 50mm.

It's a dense little brush. Work it the same as you would any other. See what you get. Adapt, improvise, experiment. :)

I have a Whipped Dog 16 mm brush that also has a 40 mm loft that I use for travel. It took a while for me to get accustomed to the brush, but it now works great and will give me at least two passes if not three.

What worked best for me was to load the brush as best I could, which was still a bit soap rich, and then face lather. The lather builds up rather quickly once I start face lathering and soon has lather consistency that compairs with my larger brushes, allowing me to apply the rest of the first pass normally as well as the second pass and often the third pass. Sometimes for the third pass I need a little more water and gently add a little more soap.

Keep trying. I'm sure you will get it to work great.

+1

I have an EJ superbadger 19 mm knot, around 42 mm loft and the technique for me is the same. Just be a bit careful not to end up with lather in your fingertips...!!!!:biggrin1:
