Superior lathercatcher Pat. Aug 22 1900

I have an old lathercatcher that I want to try. I've been DE shaving mostly for a year and a half or so. I tried an old Star a while ago with bad results, but I have had good success with my MMOC. Can anyone give me a few pointers/advice before I try this razor? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I really want to try this razor, and I hope someone can coach me a little. Thanks again.

Well, it's my understanding there is a technique to it. Even if I only get a SAS out of it it will have been worth the experiance.

Thank you Heespharm, I just completed my shave, SAS was all I went for, and did it in two full passes. It's a good thing I keep a bottle of Nivea handy, I needed it. This weapon of mass destruction was tame compared to the Star I have. That thing had me worried after I was done. This one, for some reason is a much more manageable razor. Now I feel like I accomplished my task of being able to shave with a lathercatcher. Have a good night.

Glad to hear you accomplished a decent shave!
I have the same razor and find that the Superior gives a very good shave.

In my experience, most LCs with a modern blade are very mild. You would think they were a horror show with how they look and the blade exposed, but it's the opposite. Glad your shave went well

Thanks InfernoOrangeSS. Even though I took my time, I ended up with a couple of weepers. All in all, it was a good shave.

I own 2 lather catchers. The GEM Jr. Bar is very mild. Set the frame flush against your face and go to town. An easy DFS every time. The R&S Manufacturing Co. Yankee razor is a beast. The comb provides little protection from the blade. It's super aggressive. The point is that there's a fair bit of variation between the various incarnations of the lather catcher. Keeps things interesting.

got to remember that the earliest lather catchers were just a single step away from the prevailing straight razor. So back in the day, if you just got your brand new in the box lather catcher, you still had a straight razor on your sink. Must of seemed like cheating for those guys.

Thanks Dcobranchi, and gearchow, this was my second shave with a lathercatcher. The first one was a lesson in pain. It was an 1896 Star, and that thing was MIDEVIL!!! I thought I could just fire and forget on that one, boy was I mistaken! It took me several days to heal up, but I got back on the horse so to speak. The lathercatchers are definitely an acquired taste. But this last shave came off so well, that I will use it again sometime. Thanks for all the interest, and input gentlemen, have a good day.
